Summer Comes Early at the Library

Posted May 27, 2015

At Shorewood Library, summer always starts right after Memorial Day - when the sign-up for Summer Reading kicks off a host of fun in (and out of) the sun.

This year, we're excited to have some new events on the books (no pun intended!), as well as some classics we wouldn't pass up for the world. Here are some highlights of what's coming up this summer.

June

We help you start your summer off right with an evening of Shakespeare on the lawn, Saturday, June 6 at 6:00 p.m. Enjoy a bit of theater right on the grass outside the library - be sure to bring a picnic and good friends for this second annual visit from Stone Soup Shakespeare.

We're also excited about another recurring program that starts in June: the 3rd annual Teen Photo Contest. Teens and tweens can also game, fan and tinker in June - all part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2015.

In addition to our regularly scheduled programs for children and families - Terrific Tuesdays and Pop in and Play - this summer we're introducing Wednesday Art Cart. Every Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. starting June 17,  kids can drop by the children's area for an arty activity. Most appropriate for school-age children, but all ages are welcome! Plus - don't miss the Superheroes Celebration on June 25!

July

July is always capped off with our Summer Celebration, but this year we're also featuring some fun new programs including two special author-illustrator visits:

On July 1, we'll host authors/illustrators Tina and Carson Kugler to talk about their picture book In Mary's Garden, celebrating the life and colorful garden of local artist Mary Nohl. All ages are welcome to hear the discussion, and participate in an illustrating activity afterwards. Later, on July 15, local author-illustrator Andy Rash will come show us how to create a superhero at a family story evening called Superhero ABC

You can learn more about the Summer Reading programs for tots and kids over on the Kids' Summer Reading page, and for teens on the Teen Summer Reading Challenge page. Our complete Events Calendar can be found here.
