Controversy strikes 2015 Memorial Day Run as Mitchell Kun, Jeanne Pare win

The 2015 Memorial Day Run wasn't without controversy when you consider the men's winner took a wrong turn and the first female to cross the finish line was disqualified.

Mitchell Kun, a 21-year-old senior-to-be at Stony Brook, was the overall winner of Monday's 35th Staten Island Advance Memorial Day Four-Mile Run.

The Brooklyn resident and Sheepshead Bay HS graduate clocked 21 minutes, 7.38 seconds despite taking a wrong turn on the South Beach course.

John Pollina was second with a 21:16.20 timing and Thomas Reimer third at 21:18.93.

Three-time reigning women's Triple Crown winner Victoria Pontecorvo crossed the finish line first with a 25:03.67, but the 23-year-old first-year law student was disqualified because she joined the field more than 200 yards into the race.

Veteran runner Jeanne Pare, 54, was declared the winner at 25:30.83 with Melissa Kraker taking second with a 25:47.68.
