Woodbridge man used courier to traffic drugs across Canada: police

Toronto police are concerned about large amounts of ketamine that have been seized in the GTA.

They intercepted five kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of ketamine and $175,000 in Canadian cash that they displayed for the media on Friday.

On May 20, police were notified by a GTA courier service about suspicious packages and the possibility a man was trying to traffic controlled substances.

Ketamine is a drug that is commonly used in sexual assaults and is known as a date rape drug.

The drugs were being shipped as packages through a national courier and were disguised with paprika, police said.

The packages were also stamped with the Star of David.

Police said it is becoming common for drug traffickers to mark their products.

The drugs are believed to have been on their way to Edmonton.

“Toronto is the largest city in Canada and a major transit hub. But it also holds true that it relates to the travel of many controlled substances,” said Insp. Howie Page.

Anh Tung Ly, 28, of Woodbridge faces multiple charges including possession of cocaine and possession of ketamine.

Ketamine was originally designed as an anesthetic and tranquilizer on horses during surgery by veterinarians, said police.

“Due to the detached dream-like state it creates, the user often finds it difficult to move,” said Page.

Toronto police are asking anyone with information on this seizure or the trafficking of any illegal substances through the mail or through national courier companies to contact them at 416-808-6110 or Crime Stoppers.
