Now that Awareness Week 2015 is over, we'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone that made a difference this year!

Whether you came to one of our walks, put on an event of your own or even just helped to spread the word on social media, you've helped us to make a big impact. From talks at schools to cake sales to skydives, we've been thrilled to see how many of you have got involved, and we look forward to telling you more about all of these once the totals are tallied up.

Getting involved isn't just limited to our Awareness Week - there are plenty of opportunities for you to help CLAPA as a fundraiser or volunteer - including a few in this email. Let's keep the momentum going all year round until the whole UK is #cleftaware!

In the meantime, check out some of the photos from our walks on our Flickr page >>

Chris Joins CLAPA

"I joined CLAPA in May 2015 as National Volunteering Officer to support volunteers in the areas of the UK without a Regional Coordinator. It is wonderful to be working with so many inspiring and dedicated people who support Cleft Lip and Palate."

"CLAPA has a fantastic relationship with its volunteers, fundraisers and the Cleft Teams, so I’ve been given a really warm welcome already. I have very strong links with CLAPA being born with a Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate. I have been a volunteer and fundraiser for many years and remain Chairman of the Great Ormond Hospital Branch. We’ve already seen some fantastic achievements at CLAPA and I’m very much looking forward to building on these over the coming months. "

You can get in touch with Chris about volunteering by emailing volunteer@clapa.com.

Volunteering Opportunities

Below are two chances to get involved with volunteering for CLAPA.

In both cases, expenses will be paid, including reasonable travel and meals, and accommodation will be provided for those that need it.

Volunteer Induction Day

Become an official CLAPA volunteer at our next Induction Day - a chance to learn more about CLAPA, how you could help, meet others locally, and, of course, have fun!

DATE: Saturday 13th June
LOCATION: London

As one parent volunteer said after completing an induction day and going on to fill several volunteer roles: "I like to think of CLAPA as a family, we all support each other, share our highs and our lows and offer encouragement and advice to each other."

Parent Contact Training Weekend

Be there for another parent in need by training to become a CLAPA Parent Contact.

DATE: Weekend of 11th-12th July

Over the weekend you'll learn not just about cleft and CLAPA, but also about listening skills and how to be supportive to those who may be going through a tough time. We will go through case studies and scenarios with you to make sure you're ready to take on the role, and there'll be plenty of chances to talk to other prospective Parent Contacts.

Please apply by Friday 12th June

STUDY: Visible Differences and Intimacy

A new study is looking to explore the impact of a visible difference (such as a cleft scar) on intimate relationships. The study will be in the form of one-to-one interviews, either in person or over the phone.

If you are aged 18 or over and either you or your partner has an altered appearance and you would be willing to discuss your experiences then more information can be found by following the link below or by contacting Nick on 0117 328 1891 or nick.sharratt@uwe.ac.uk

Share Your Thoughts on Healthtalk's Cleft Lip & Palate Module

Healthtalk.org is a fantastic resource packed with information and video interviews with people affected by a huge range of health issues. The Cleft Lip and Palate module launched late last year, and as someone affected by cleft, Healthtalk.org would love to know what you think!

You can either attend a special focus group to discuss this, or you could simply submit your thoughts to the researcher who has put the page together.
