Celebrating Spring

With the advent of spring and new growth, CavanKerry has much to celebrate. Our press was awarded the 2015 Ambassador Award from the state of New Jersey and several of our authors have been recognized with awards and honors.

The AWP Conference in Minneapolis in April was a great success. Authors Dawn Potter, Loren Graham, and Brent Newsom joined me at the CavanKerry table to answer questions and sign copies of their books. It was wonderful to work with each of them as we talked to the many conference goers about submissions, our community outreach programs, and what it is like to be an author working with the people at CavanKerry. They were the yin to my yang, and as such we made many new friends and connections.

The last of our three Spring 2015 releases (Pam Bernard's Esther: A Novel in Verse) has been ushered into the hands of readers. If you haven’t already, visit our website to learn more and to purchase one of these books. Because there is no better way to enjoy the sounds and smells of the season than by immersing yourself in poetry.

Ester: A Novel in Verse

by Pam Bernard

A novel-in-verse, Esther is molded with the poet’s tools - among them sound and image, and the belief that the smallest increments of language can provide the grace to withstand, in the name of family, the onslaught of human failings and cruelty.

Love's Labors

by Brent Newsom

In a debut remarkable for its formal control and emotional range, Brent Newsom tunes narrative and lyric impulses to an idiom rooted in his native Louisiana. Love’s Labors plumbs themes of family, work, and sex, from a perspective both tempered and troubled by the language and traditions of Christian faith.

Places I Was Dreaming

by Loren Graham

Places I Was Dreaming is a beautifully presented study in poetic tone and the function of story that introduces us to a plucky boy living in rural poverty. The book follows him from preschool through his third grade winter, showing us his life in an extended family of storytellers in which everyone talks at the same time and the lack of money is an ever-present threat that even a child cannot help but be aware of.

Given by the state of New Jersey's Governor’s Council on Mental Health Stigma, the Ambassador Award recognizes literary and visual artists and arts organizations whose work best generates a positive image of people whose lives are affected by mental illness, reduces the ways in which society stigmatizes people with mental illnesses and successfully uses the arts to promote wellness and recovery.
