Letter: Put St. Johns County sales tax hike on the ballot

Chuck Forcier

Editor: I am writing in hopes of persuading the county commissioners to approve a ballot measure so the citizens can consider a 1-cent sales tax increase.

I, like many others in our county, understand the need to be fiscally conservative. However, I also understand that, in order to maintain and improve upon the quality of life we have in St Johns county, we must continue to find new sources of revenue.

We are currently living with an outdated sales tax rate. Yet we expect modern day services. A modest .penny increase in the sales tax will allow us to continue to maintain and build great parks, upgrade our beaches and improve our services for all of our citizens. There are many more advantages I can write about, but for today the goal is to simply get this question on the ballot and then the citizens can discuss it further.

At the end of the day, the question the BOCC needs to ask itself is, do we want to be a good county or a great county. I say let's be great, let's be exceptional and let's provide the services that make us No. 1. Let's do this, not for the greater good, but for the greater great! And then let's let the voters decide!
