Albrecht Durer is considered one of the greatest artists of all time, and his “Adam and Eve” engraving ranks among the most important pieces of art to come out of the Northern Renaissance, according to an art historian.

“It’s one of Durer’s most important works, and he was one of the great engravers — and one of the greatest painters — of the Northern Renaissance,” said H. Perry Chapman, an art history professor at the University of Delaware.

“He’s really one of the greatest artists of all time. He’s certainly on par with the greats.”

The “Adam and Eve” engraving — worth an estimated $600,000 — stands out from the rest because Durer drew upon his vast knowledge of Italian art and combined it with a close study of human anatomy to create a masterpiece, Chapman said.

“He made this new, highly idealized version of Adam and Eve that he embellished with animals throughout the piece,” she said. “So, aside from these two figures … he embellished it with these animals that looked so wonderfully real, but also have symbolic meaning.”

Durer, who hailed from Germany, honed his craft during the Protestant Reformation, Chapman said.

The missing engraving, from 1504, is about 8 inches by 11 inches.
