Food For Thought: Eating To Keep Your Brain Sharp

Before you pick up that fork – the food that you’re eating could be an indicator of how well your brain will age in your later years, new research suggests.

Eating a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts could significantly help in keeping your brain, memory and cognitive functions intact as you get older, according to a study by researchers at McMaster University and published in the journal Neurology.

For the study, researchers looked at over 27,000 participants who were over the age of 55 and came from 40 different countries.

Over a five year period, the participants who ate the healthiest only had a 14 percent decrease in thinking and memory skills, compared to an 18 percent decrease in those who ate less healthy.

They also found that participants who ate a diet without or with only low amounts of red meat, alcohol or deep-fried foods had less of a decrease in brain power.
