New Contest! The Mystery of the Missing Frames

1

Every InDesign user knows that part of the job is figuring out what you’re seeing on screen — but sometimes it’s a matter of figuring out what you know is there but that you don’t see on screen! So for this month’s InDesignSecrets contest, here’s one of my favorite “what you see is not what you get” troubleshooting mysteries.

Take a look at my screen, below:

MysteryFrame1

I have one frame selected on the page. However, I happen to know that there are two more empty frames on this page (a graphic frame and a text frame). So why can’t I see them?

Here are a few additional details:

  • No, the frames are not behind the panel!
  • The frames are fully on the page (they’re not even touching the pasteboard).
  • View > Extras > Show Edges is enabled, so we should be able to see the frame edges.
  • No objects or layers are hidden or locked or anything else weird.
  • If you hover your cursor over the frames, they highlight until you move your cursor off them.

So… again… why can’t I see those frames?

Email Mike your solution at mike at indesignsecrets.com before Wednesday May 27th, 2015. At that time, we’ll reveal the solution and choose one winner at random from the correct answers.

And that lucky person will win a 2-seat license for in5 from Ajar Productions!

If you’re not familiar with in5, here’s why it is an amazing solution for digital publishing:

  • in5 lets you export all of InDesign’s interactive capabilities (audio, video, hyperlinks, buttons, multi-state objects, folio overlays, and yes, even animation!) to an open format that can be viewed on any device (unlike Flash or interactive PDFs).
  • There are no additional tools or panels to learn with in5, just those already found in InDesign.
  • After exporting, you can post your content directly to the web, or you can re-purpose it for any number of platforms using DPS, Baker Framework, PhoneGap Build, or the Amazon Marketplace.
  • With a single selection, in5 can also export your content as a Web App, so that it can be saved to the Home Screen of a mobile device without the need to sign up for a developer’s account or submit to an app store.
  • There are no fees to export, so you can publish as much as you want.
  • The export format is open and editable (if you’re so inclined).
  • Analytics, social sharing, mobile scaling, and offline caching are all integrated into in5.

A 2-seat license for in5 currently goes for $299, but you’ll have a shot at getting it for free if you send us the correct answer! So put on your thinking cap and solve this mystery!

Good luck!
