Yes, You Are Actually Feeling Your Butt Flatten as You Sit on It at Your Desk All Day

From Cosmopolitan

The thing about working is that it (1) is necessary and (2) has consequences. Those who sit at a desk for eight or more hours a day are prone to hypertension, heart attacks, depression, and, worst of all, the New York Post reports, "office ass," the slow but continual flattening of one's ass as she sits at her desk all day.

Physical therapist Abby Bales confirmed to the Post that the longer you sit on your butt without moving, the more likely it is you'll have "a difficult time actively engaging [your] glutes to both strengthen and shape them," which means the effects of your lunges could be canceled out by sitting at work: "The more you sit, the more you have the chance of developing a flatter booty."

Those who work desk jobs don't usually have the luxury of getting time off during the day to work out, but just standing or walking around for five minutes once an hour "increases your hip extension" and activates the butt muscles you're trying to prevent from flattening. For those who don't have time to break every hour, Bales suggests sitting up straight, placing a cushion on the back half of your chair, and walking to work instead of driving.
