Move over, ketchup: Guinness releases sauce for barbecue season

The latest addition to the Guinness product portfolio isn't a beer - it's a condiment. Could it be the making of your BBQ this summer?

Guinness is one of the most popular brands of beer all over the world and come St Patrick's Day, you would look downright peculiar if you didn’t have a pint of the dark stuff from Ireland in your hand.

Up until now, the tangy stout has been reserved for evenings at the pub or a few tinnies in the park on a sunny afternoon. However, it seems we will be seeing a lot more of it as the barbecue season approaches.

Guinness has spent the last two years working alongside sauce specialists to create a product that will they hope rival ketchup and brown sauce on our tables this summer. The sauce mixes a blend of spices and herbs with the beer, with seven per cent of each bottle made up of the alcoholic brew. The company says that the sauce is "specifically made to enjoy with meats", such as sausages and mash and beef burgers.

"Guinness has a strong history of being used as a unique ingredient in food as it delivers a great taste experience like nothing else," said a spokesman. "Today in restaurants, bars and homes around the world Guinness is used in cooking. We have developed Guinness sauce so that consumers can enjoy the great taste experience of Guinness in a wonderful, premium sauce that is versatile and convenient.'"

The company is clearly set on expanding its product portfolio beyond stout. The Guinness Webstore sells a variety of Guinness confectionary, including Guinness fudge and Guinness chocolate, as well as a range of Guinness-themed kitchenware. Guinness also collaborated with HP back in 2011 to make a Guinness-flavoured brown sauce, which was discontinued in 2013.

Guinness sauce will be on sale in Tesco from mid May, priced at £1.49 a bottle, and has already provoked polarised opinions online. Only time will tell whether ketchup has a rival.
