Vienna Airport Receives Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 3 Optimisation for its Extensive CO2 Reduction

Vienna Airport has reduced its CO2 emissions by 27% since 2012 through numerous measures

Vienna Airport has reduced its CO2 emissions by more than 27% since 2012, and further measures are planned. In recognition of its successful efforts, the Vienna flight hub was given the Level 3 Optimisation, within the context of its global CO2 reduction programme. In line with the four-stage “Airport Carbon Accreditation programme”, airports around the world commit themselves to holistically and sustainably reduce their CO2 emissions. Vienna Airport’s next target is to have entirely CO2 neutral operations.

“Sustainability and energy efficiency are important corporate goals of Flughafen Wien AG. The Level 3 certificate confirms that we are on a highly successful path in this regard. The achievements in recent years demonstrate that it is possible to be economically successful and simultaneously cut costs and energy consumption. By 2022, we want to have reduced CO2 emissions by 30% compared to 2012. In the long term, Vienna Airport should become a CO2 neutral business“, state Günther Ofner and Julian Jäger, Members of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG.
In the years 2012 to 2016, Vienna Airport managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by about 27% and its specific energy consumption per traffic unit by 14.2% thanks to its ongoing ecological commitment and continuing improvements which for the most part also lead to cost savings. In 2016, CO2 emissions totalled 34,175 tonnes (1.34 kg/traffic unit), down from 46,876 tonnes (1.95 kg/traffic unit) in the year 2012. In the same period (2012 to 2016), fuel consumption for Vienna Airport vehicles was cut by 10.3% and total energy requirements fell 6.8% despite a 5.7% rise in traffic units.

Global CO2 reduction programme at airports
The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme is a programme exclusively for airports to account for and reduce controllable CO2 emissions at the airport site. On the basis of international standards, greenhouse gas emissions generated by airports are calculated featuring an independent review of the CO2 scorecard (carbon footprint) and CO2 reduction targets are specified with the long-term goal of becoming a CO2 neutral airport. The path consists of four steps: Vienna Airport was already certified according to Level 1 Mapping in the year 2013, followed by the promotion to Level 2 Reduction in 2015. All companies operating at the airport have to be integrated into the CO2 optimisation efforts in order to achieve Level 3 certification.

An eye on all controllable CO2 emissions: Vienna Airport granted Level 3 certification
Vienna Airport has now achieved Level 3 status. For this purpose, comprehensive surveys of emissions were required, also encompassing flight and landside traffic. Company-wide measures to reduce the overall level of CO2 emissions were required in addition to the additional compilation of CO2 emissions in the entire landing and take-off (LTO) cycle for activities below the altitude of 1,000 meters and CO2 emissions from aircraft engine test runs, from third-party ground handling devices, the entire electricity procurement of the Vienna Airport site (including lessees and other companies on the site) as well as the entire landside traffic, caused by both arriving and departing passengers as well as employees of the airport operating company.

Vienna Airport aims to further cut its CO2 emissions by 2022
Furthermore, Flughafen Wien AG has set a target of reducing its CO2 emissions per traffic unit by 30% by the year 2022 compared to the level of 2012. For this purpose, investments of up to € 30 million in energy efficiency and CO2 reduction measures are planned. In 2016, two photovoltaic plants with more than 2,000 solar modules on a total area of about 3,200m² were put into operation, generating more than 500,000 kWh of solar electricity each year. Another photovoltaic plant will come on stream in 2017 on the roof of the Air Cargo Centre on an area of approximately 5,000 m², making it one of the largest photovoltaic facilities in Austria. Sustainable improvements in energy efficiency have already been achieved by converting lighting and air conditioning systems, optimising the transmission grids and investing in the vehicle fleet. The airport vehicle fleet is to be comprehensively converted to electric-powered and natural gas-driven vehicles by 2020. Today Vienna Airport already operates one of Austria’s largest natural gas-powered vehicle fleets. The changeover from diesel-driven to 30 electric-powered catering forklift trucks will enable the airport to save about 275,000 litres of diesel annually.
