Yusuf Aker: Top KCPE performer who was to repeat Class 8

A student who scored 380 marks in the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations has been forced to repeat Class 8 after failing to raise fee required to join secondary school.

Yusuf Aker from Mokong’wo village in Tiaty, Baringo County, was called to join Kapsabet Boys High School, which is a national school, but missed the slot after all available sponsorship opportunities slipped through his fingers.

Citizen Digital caught up with the boy, whose dream of becoming a doctor has now been dealt a heavy blow, sitting for a Kiswahili opening term exam paper at the very school where he sat his KCPE last year.

Tangulbei Primary School headteacher James Merinyang expressed shock at seeing him in class last week despite the fact that he had topped the entire school in the national exam not so long ago.

Aker now lives with his grandmother, 82-year-old Chepisogei Lotegu, in a grass thatched house after his father and nine other siblings were killed in a banditry attack on the border of Pokot and Samburu when he was just 3 years old.

Lotegu, the boy’s only remaining hope and last line of defense, makes a living purely out of a ballast business where she sometimes makes nothing and returns home with no money even for food.

The octogenarian now seems to have lost all hope in supporting her grandchild to secondary school level, further appealing to well-wishers to support Aker proceed with his studies.
