Your window treatments can make or break a room (as if there wasn’t enough riding on your other design choices). You don’t want to block out all of the light, but you want to be able to tone things down on our bright, sunny Middle Tennessee days. Make sure that your window coverings don’t detract from the rest of the décor while creating noticeable and stylish accents.

Whether you’re a drape person or you prefer blinds, here are three things you need to know about choosing the perfect window treatments in any room.

The right window treatments can help create a stylish space.

Window Treatment Tip #1: Understand Placement

Carbine & Associates, Franklin, TN

Elongate your windows by hanging your drapes higher like designer Julie Couch has in this Carbine & Associates’ Parade of Homes house in Brentwood, TN.

When most people hang a curtain rod, they aim just above the window frame – don’t! Hanging your curtain rod just beneath the base of the ceiling molding elongates your space and makes your windows look bigger; if the curtain rod is right above the window frame, you’re wasting space and taking away from the aesthetics in your room.

You’ll also want to hang your curtain rod wider than the window frame. The ideal length is 6 to 8 inches on both sides – that way, the window becomes an architectural feature and a piece of stand-alone décor. Your space will appear brighter and roomier, too.

Window Treatment Tip #2: Texture is Good

You don’t have to stick with plain, white Venetian blinds. In fact, choosing bamboo, rattan or other natural fibers can add depth and style. You can also choose cloth blinds in a shade that complements the rest of your décor.

Window Treatment Tip #3: Pick What You Like

Don’t let what’s “trendy” or “in” force you to make a decision that you’re not comfortable making. You’re the one who has to look at your window treatments every day, and it’s important that you choose something that makes you happy.
