A Pioneer Murder Mystery

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Event Details

April of 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of the first known murder in what is today Hamilton County. However, there are many questions about what actually happened. Native Americans were accused of committing this crime, but analysis of the stories suggests that someone else may have done it and tried to shift the guilt.

The panelists in this virtual seminar will examine the evidence from their areas of expertise. Panelists include: Diane Hunter, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Miami Nation of Oklahoma; Captain Scott McKinney of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department; and Dr. David Murphy, Professor of History at Anderson University and author of Murder in Their Hearts: The Fall Creek Massacre (2011). At the end of the program, the audience will vote on whether they consider the stories to be true or false. This program will be moderated by David Heighway, Hamilton County Historian.
