Epic Fails: 3 Elite Makers Discuss The Upside of Failure

Over the past few months, three notable makers have been delighting listeners with their podcasted conversations about tools, creativity, and the magic of building. The show, called Making It, comes from David Picciuto (The Drunken Woodworker), Bob Clagett (I Like to Make Stuff), and Jimmy DiResta (Discovery’s Dirty Money, and regular Make: video contributor).

During each episode, they discuss a broad range of themes covering anything from curiosity to organization to hand tools versus computer-controlled. Each episode is an insightful look into the mindsets and processes of the three collaborators, each of whom has turned their enthusiasm for making into full-time professions.

One of their more interesting episodes discussed the concept of failure, and the three revisited this conversation on stage at the Bay Area Maker Faire 2015 (and kindly allowed me to sit in on the panel as well). To a packed house, we talked about what constitutes an “Epic Fail,” how they get around those issues, and, of course, all the silliness and tomfoolery that viewers and listeners have come to expect from them. “I’m Jimmy DiResta and I like to make stuff,” got the chat off to a laughing start.

One interesting point that didn’t come out on stage is that, despite the smoothness and comfort of their podcast, this was the first time the three had all been together in person.
