Sussex County debuts enhanced planning and zoning information portal

Georgetown, Del., May 19, 2015: Sussex County is making the business of land use a little more user-friendly for the public it serves.

County Administrator Todd F. Lawson on Tuesday, May 19, demonstrated to the County Council and the public an enhanced portal on the County’s website designed to be a one-stop-shop for planning and zoning information. Until now, anyone interested in learning more about past or future land use in the county – especially proposals to develop land – either had to hopscotch among several pages on the County’s website, or travel to Georgetown to actually leaf through hard-copy paper documents. The process was tedious and time-consuming.

Mr. Lawson and County staff set out to change that in 2014, beginning a months-long project to design a new simplified portal, digitize tens of thousands of document files, and present the information in a more organized format.

“Frankly, we were behind the times, and it created an inconvenience for our customers,” Mr. Lawson said. “This new portal puts parcel information, detailed maps, hearing audios and minutes, and other items related to a property in one easy-to-navigate page on our website. This is a monumental leap forward in the service we provide to the public.”

The portal contains zoning information for applications dating back to 2010, and can be sorted by application type, year, and status; customers also can track new information as it is posted. To visit the portal, log on to sussexcountyde.gov/land-use-application-docket.
