MUSIC: Africa’s biggest female artists unite #WithStrongGirls everywhere

ONE

Nine of Africa’s most talented artists have come together to create a new anthem that celebrates the power of girls and women everywhere. It’s called, “Strong Girl.”

The song is incredible. But don’t take it from me:

Isn’t it the best?!

The nine female vocalists are Victoria Kimani, Vanessa Mdee, Arielle T, Gabriela, Judith Sephuma, Waje, Selmor Mtukudzi, Yemi Alade and, in her debut performance, Blessing. Nigerian actress Omotola stars alongside them in the video.

They’ve come together to share one message: empower girls and women in the poorest countries, so they can lift their own communities out of poverty.

Our Poverty Is Sexist campaign launched on International Women’s Day this year, and so far over 115,000 people around the world have signed the petition telling world leaders to act now to help girls and women reach their full potential.

The campaign and song emphasise why women and girls are important to the fight to end extreme poverty.

The song includes artists from 7 countries, each artist contributing in the writing of the verses. The lyrics of “Strong Girl” call out the importance of standing with girls and women everywhere. All over the world, girls and women are showing their strength and achieving extraordinary things, despite the barriers they face. It’s time to stand with girls and women, because together we’re stronger.

We’re joining the global surge of solidarity that’s starting in Africa and spreading around the world. But it can’t stop there – we need the help of world leaders to put girls and women at the heart of the development agenda this year.

If we stand #WithStrongGirls and women, we could end extreme poverty for good.

You can join us in one of three ways:

  1. Post your power pose photo on social media, tagging the strong women in your life and using the #WithStrongGirls hashtag.

  2. Sign our Poverty Is Sexist petition for world leaders to deliver real change.

  3. Watch and share the ‘Strong Girl’ music video above.
