There's no single character trait that determines an entrepreneur's success. In fact, there are many personality attributes that can help a person launch and grow a business, with each offering their own strengths for forging a path to entrepreneurship.
We asked a panel of Young Entrepreneur Council members which of their character traits they consider to be their "secret weapon." From constant curiosity to unshakeable confidence, here's what they had to say.
1. Resilience
Challenges are part of life, both personally and professionally. By focusing on solutions, I've been able to move forward knowing something good was always on the other side. — Amber Anderson, Tote + Pears
2. Nurturing
My secret weapon is my natural ability and urge to nurture. I nurture my company and its growth, my employees and our clients. By taking care of them, we’ve flourished. — Rachel Beider, Massage Outpost
3. Curiosity
Curiosity leads me to question status quo, and to understand why something or someone is how they are. I often end up going down unexpected or seemingly trivial paths, but these little bits and pieces come together in useful ways! — Pokin Yeung, Absolute Games
4. Starting Conversations
Working in customer service almost every day, you learn to push past awkward moments and talk to everyone — even when you are feeling introverted. This is definitely an asset when working on the rest of the business. — Lizzy Jane Newsome Yopp, Kappa Toys
5. Graciousness
I used to think this was a weakness, but as a leader I have distinguished myself by offering grace to others. Some of the most memorable leaders and individuals in history were such because they offered graciousness in conjunction with power. — Dalia MacPhee, DALIA MACPHEE
6. Spiritual Consciousness
I've attained a level of "spiritual" consciousness through years of research, as well as practicing meditation. It's given me an ability to look at any situation and perceive the various layers of meaning that are present, which allows me to come up with powerful solutions for various challenges. — Amanda Jacqueline, Higher Realms Consulting
7. Intuition
Whether I am negotiating a deal or just having a conversation with a member of my team, the ability to read people and situations is powerful and has helped me tremendously in my career. — Jackie Ducci, Ducci & Associates
8. Confidence
My confidence is the difference between allowing people to underestimate me and showing them that I know my facts and have experience. I can quickly turn the underestimation around and shock people with my preparedness and knowledge. — Taylor Irwin, Rocky Mountain Car Wash
9. Listening
My ability to listen allows me to hear all sides of a story from multiple perspectives and allows everyone at the table to be heard. — Jess Moseley, TCS Interpreting
10. Generosity
Emotional intelligence and real relationships with real people are powerful. If there is any way I can add value to someone’s business or life in general, I take the opportunity. Relationships will always be your most valuable asset, and generosity is the basis to all things that prosper. — Hillary Hobson, Highest Cash Offer
