ANDERSONVILLE — An independently owned shop that sells eco-friendly children's clothes and toys is shuttering at the end of May, according to one of its owners.

Green Genes, 5111 N. Clark St., has been selling sustainable children's clothing, games and home goods for the last seven years. Co-owner Heather Muenstermann called the decision to close "one of the hardest decisions" she's ever made.

The shop is shuttering because Muenstermann and her business partner and wife, Tina Isperduli, are looking to spend some quality time with their young kids while they're still young, Muenstermann said.

"This place [was] in my brain 24 hours a day," Muenstermann said. "It's an absolute labor [of] love. I'm going through the stages of mourning."

Muenstermann, who has studied art, plans to spend time with family and travel this summer while she figures out her next steps.

She said she'll miss the interaction with the community the most.

"The best part of owning this business was the people I've met," she said, adding that people have suggested opening the store online, but "I really like the personal interaction."

In the leadup to the closure, the shop is offering a big farewell sale. Even the vintage fixtures are available for purchase. For a discount breakdown, visit the shop's website.

The public is invited to the shop's farewell gathering May 16. More details will be posted on the shop's Facebook page or Twitter account in the coming days.
