Daniel Libeskind, together with Italian paint company Oikos, has transformed the Università Statale’s Pharmacy Courtyard into a garden of "Future Flowers" as part of the 2015 Milan Design Week. On view through May 24, the installation was inspired by one of Libeskind’s "Chamberwork" drawings. It features a series of intersecting red metal "blades" that represent a collection of Oikos paints developed by Libeskind.
Through their manipulation and arrangement, the panels act as a system of linear and planar elements activated by the changing reflections of light playing off their glossy finish. Utilizing the angles of both the infiltrating light and the panels, the installation reflects the light in multiple directions, creating a luminous rhythm with the illusion of movement reminiscent of swaying flowers.
"These are not classic flowers," explained Libeskind. "I myself imagined them through architectural design elements thanks to research with Oikos.”
It is hoped that the installation will leave observers with the impression that, as Libeskind described it, “color is the very essence of life.”
