Report: Marvel wants Selma director for Black Panther or Captain Marvel (correction)

Marvel Studios and Ava DuVernay are in discussions that could see the Selma director assume those duties for the Black Panther or Captain Marvel movie, The Wrap reports.

The publication's sources say that Marvel wants to hire a black director for Black Panther and a woman for Captain Marvel. Marvel is also said to be in discussions with other directors.

Marvel announced Phase 3 of its Cinematic Universe last October. Black Panther is scheduled for a July 6, 2018 release. Captain Marvel will follow a few months later, on Nov. 2, 2018.

Black Panther was introduced in the late 1960s and holds the distinction of being the first mainstream black comic book superhero. Chadwick Boseman will portray him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning next year in Captain America: Civil War.

The character Carol Danvers will assume the role of Captain Marvel in the upcoming movie. Danvers has also been known as Ms. Marvel in comic book lore. Introduced in the late 1960s as the female counterpart to Captain Marvel, her superpowers at one point came from an explosion that fused her DNA with Captain Marvel’s. What her story will become is unknown, as Marvel’s Secret Wars is currently resetting the universe.

Released last year, DuVernay's Selma chronicled Martin Luther King's 1965 civil rights journey to from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. to secure equal voting rights. Selma won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song this year. It was also nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year.

Correction: A previous version of this article said that Danvers is currently known as Ms. Marvel. She's not. That's Kamala Khan currently. We've updated the article to remove the incorrect attribution. We also inserted an image of Danvers as Ms. Marvel, since that's who the character will be in the movie.
