Being Married Could Help You Live Longer

While the evidence of married bliss is ever-present in news feeds and the number of RSVP’s showing up in the mail, the business of saying “I do” might help keep you living for longer, new research suggests.

Patients with cancer who are married may live longer than those who are single, according to a study by researchers at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program and published in the Journal of Marriage and Family.

For the study, researchers assessed participants who had been diagnosed with one of the ten leading cancer killers including colon, breast, and pancreatic cancers.

They found evidence that the emotional support and support system that comes with having a spouse was beneficial to the health of the patient and contributed to long life.  This particularly evident for men for than women.

There will be an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. in 2015 and 589,430 deaths from cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
