A cafe owner in Hackney has threatened to charge Tory voters 10 per cent extra for their coffee.

Conservative caffeine seekers at HER in Haggerston have been asked to identify themselves upon entering the shop so a “Tory Tax” can be added to their £2.60 lattes.

Owner First Sukpaiboon, 35, said she had penned the message to her customers in the aftermath of Friday’s shock election result in protest against “the pain” caused by the last Tory-led government.

So far not a single customer has owned up to voting for the Conservatives in the Labour stronghold where Meg Hillier MP has held the seat since 2005, winning last week’s election with a 64 per cent share of the vote.

The sign reads: “Please could anyone who voted Conservative identify themselves on entering my shop. I will be happy to apply a 10% ‘Tory Tax’ on your coffee.

“I’m sure you can understand this is one of my tough decisions I need to make to balance the books – don’t be shy!”

One Tory supporter Juliette, in her 20s, took to Twitter saying: “Looks like I’m not welcome to go back to @her_haggerston any time soon. Friendly #itscalleddemocracy.”

Ms Sukpaiboon, a Labour voter, said: “The sign is more of a joke really. But we have felt the pain around here and it was sighs all round after Friday and it will be more pain to come over the next five years.

“Most people just laugh at the sign and don’t take it too seriously. Hackney is very Labour so we haven't had anyone come in and say they voted Tory, although one person did get in contact over Twitter, but I haven’t received any complaints.”

The coffee shop in Downham Road has caused a stir before with its changing blackboard. Two years ago the sign captioned “Come insider HER for a coffee” went viral and sparked complaints from shocked neighbours.
