Former Auburn forward Alex Thompson will play basketball at Samford next season.

The Dothan native announced his intentions to transfer to the Birmingham-based college Sunday on Twitter. He left the Tigers in late April.

Thompson averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game. He scored a career-high 16 points in the Tigers' victory against Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament.

The sophomore served an "indefinite leave of absence" August through November and returned to the team in mid-December.

The 6-foot-8 forward was awarded a scholarship in January 2014 by then-coach Tony Barbee after walking on in the fall of 2013. The Dothan native was a finalist for Alabama's Mr. Basketball award at Houston Academy in 2013.

Auburn forward Matthew Atewe transferred to Washington after missing the 2014-15 season due to a leg injury.
