Why has Duchess Meghan rejected the ‘messy bun’ she once loved?

The Wimbledon Championships 2019

When then-Meghan Markle got engaged to Prince Harry, there was much to-do about her hair. Even in the first months of marriage, there was a particular focus on Meghan’s hairstyles, specifically her love of “messy buns.” Meghan used to love a messy bun. She used to love an imperfect hairstyle, where everything wasn’t slicked back and tightly secured. Even on her wedding day, Meghan did a “messy bun,” and she had strands of hair out, framing her face. Back then, the criticism du jour was that Meghan was “breaking protocol,” because there’s some kind of hair protocol where royal women are never supposed to have loose strands of hair. Except there is no f–king protocol and there never was. But the criticism possibly got to Meghan, because in recent appearances, whenever she wears her hair back, everything is slicked down and secured and there are no more “messy buns.” Of course the Daily Mail has a theory:

A stylist has revealed how the Duchess of Sussex opted for sleek up-do during her appearance at the Lion King premiere in London on Sunday, to protect her post-pregnancy locks. Meghan, 37, joined Prince Harry, 34, for her official first red carpet appearance as a royal at the Leicester Square premiere last night, meeting Beyonce and Elton John at the star-studded event. The new mother, who welcomed baby Archie in May, looked resplendent in a black Jason Wu gown and her favourite Aquazzura pumps, and notably opted for a chic bun for the occasion.

This is the fourth occasion Meghan has worn her hair up since giving birth two months ago, wearing a slicked-back bun for Trooping The Colour, her Wimbledon visit last week, and her appearance on Sunday, and a ponytail with a knot fastening for Archie’s christening.

Speaking to Femail, celebrity hair stylist James Johnson revealed that the up-do is the perfect style for new mothers, as it protects the hair from further damage following pregnancy. James said: ‘When you’re pregnant your hair cycle stops so you don’t shed any hair, so when you give birth, all the hair you should have lost in the nine months falls out over a quick period. Meghan may have opted for a scraped back bun to prevent her hair from further damage. It’s also a quick hairstyle and perfect for hot weather. If her hair was damaged during pregnancy, putting her hair up will prevent it from further damage. Also she was previously criticised for her ‘messy bun’ so maybe she’s trying to go for a more polished look to silence the haters.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I remember a celebrity woman – I can’t remember who – describing her hair coming out in clumps after she gave birth. At the time, I honestly didn’t know that was a thing, but I’ve learned a lot since then. It’s true, many postpartum women lose some hair and their hair simply isn’t as full, voluminous or lustrous as it was during their pregnancy. So it’s possible that Meghan is just dealing with the postpartum hair change by styling her hair differently. It’s also quite possible that she genuinely heard the criticism of her messy buns and decided to change her favorite hairstyle. Personally, I didn’t mind the messy buns and I don’t mind the un-messy buns. My issue is that I hate that her hair is SO slicked down and pulled so tight. I feel like she needs some volume around her face.

Or she just wanted to change up her look…like we all do from time to time.

    • Seraphina says:

I agree with wanting to change one’s look. Maybe she thinks she needs to look more polished and a messy bun is, well messy and not polished???? But I do agree that I’m not digging the sleeked back hair. Some volume or maybe bangs???? She has a beautiful face so seeing different hairstyles frame it would be nice.

    • Eleonor says:

This, why do we have to go to the theory, when maybe she wanted to change hairstyle?
I look again at that black dress….horrible fitting on a beautiful woman.

      • Melissa says:

I find it interesting how different that dress looks on certain photos vs videos. To me it looks better on the videos I’ve seen online, and I think she looks classic and beautiful in the photos she took while greeting the cast.

      • Becks1 says:

@Melissa – I like this black dress overall, but something I have noticed about Meghan is that she often wears things that don’t photograph well, but look beautiful when I see them in videos/in motion. I had a bunch of examples of this last fall lol but now the big one that stands out to me is that blue ruched/pleated dress she wore last summer, it was not really flattering in photographs but when I watched video from the event it was beautiful.

      • MsIam says:

I think the dress may not photograph well. Or maybe just the pictures that were publidhed were selected because they are not flattering. Who knows? But one outfit she wore last year, the white blouse and long black skirt combo looked a hot mess in pictures. But on the video it looked totally different and elegant and was one of my favorite outfits. I think she and the dress look beautiful and sophisticated.

      • Melissa says:

Another dress that was absolutely stunning in motion was her white Givenchy dress she wore to Ascot last year. My jaw dropped when I saw video of her walking with Harry. I think one of the biggest problems with Meghan is that there are hundreds or more of photographers at events desperate to get the money shot of her, so the first photos released are usually rushed and not taken from the best angles.

Camera phones are not forgiving, and Meghan looked beautiful and much more petite in those videos where she was greeting fans. You saw dozens of people just in awe of her. I’ve heard several people say how beautiful and delicate looking she is in person, and one of those compliments came from a royal reporter who has written some nasty things about Harry and Meghan.

      • Becks1 says:

YES Melissa that Givenchy from Ascot was a perfect example too. People were up in arms over whether it was too big or whatever but when you saw her walking in it, it was gorgeous.

    • lucy2 says:

      Right?
Woman slightly changes hairstyle. News at 11!

    • Mee says:

True but the postpartum hair loss is true. My friend had super thick hair during pregnancy, afterwards it fell out so much her hair line was an inch back. She had to give herself bangs to cover it

  2. Alexandria says:

I think she reads Celebitchy. And I think she should continue reading hahah

  3. Toot says:

Didn’t Meghan wear a messy bun when she went to Wimbledon with her friends? I know I saw bangs I think.

    • Peg says:

Thank you very much, it’s the same freaking week.
When Archie starts to grab, her hair will be the first thing he goes for.
Harry told Beyoncé that Archie is lifting up his head, and he clapped.

    • Melissa says:

Also, her hair was down at the polo match while holding Archie. Women try different hairstyles all the time. It’s not breaking news.

And maybe she just wanted a sleeker style because of the humidity and didn’t want her hair to frizz. Meghan is half black, and humidity/ heat/moisture can change your hair in a matter of minutes.

  4. Jekelly says:

After having my babies, I switched to a tighter style. Babies love to pull hair so I needed it to be contained!

    • CommentingBunny says:

That’s my theory! My boys were hair grabbers even as newborns. Especially while nursing.

Side note – my firstborn loved to wrap his and my hair around his fingers, up at the crown. He’s 16 now and has hair down to the middle of his back, and I still catch him twirling the hair at the top of his head once in a while. Makes my heart swell every time 💕

    • K-Peace says:

Was just about to write the same thing. Like Meghan, i have a baby boy, and i have always worn my (long) hair in a “messy bun” for many years. But my baby LOVES to reach up and grab any loose hair that he can get his hands on and pull! In fact, i currently look like i have little short bangs due to all the hair he pulled out in the front, which is now growing back in. So needless to say, i too switched to a tighter slicked-back bun too–no more strands of hair framing my face anymore either.

  5. minx says:

Of the two, I like the slicked back look better than the center part.

    • Erinn says:

Same. I still don’t love the slicked back, but I prefer it over the center part. She looks best with some extra volume I find.

  6. cannibell says:

It’s pretty clear from the top photo that Harry doesn’t give a rat’s patoot about how she wears her hair. He adores her, and the haters have nowhere to go with that.
    Meghan – All the points
    Haters – 0

    • Bella DuPont says:

I was thinking exactly this. Dude clearly adores her no matter what she’s wearing or how she looks.

I guess this probably helps fuel the anger and jealousy. Oh well. I

  7. OriginalLala says:

I miss her side part, she always looked amazing with a side part

    • minx says:

I agree, the side part is chic on her.

    • bananapanda says:

I hate middle parts so I’ll always agree with this. Middle parts aren’t flattering and remind me of school marms. I do not get it.

  8. laalaa says:

on the recent polo pictures, her hair is sooo long, I was so envious! but it’s true about pregnancy hair – yesterday I saw my pregnant friend who always had very fragile hair, and I noticed her hair was soooo tick and looking amazing! I hope she doesn’t lose it all, she loves it like this 🙁

    • BayTampaBay says:

After the birth of Eugenie, Fergie cut her long hair into a short bob because it was falling out in chunks. I remember reading this in some women’s magazine in the early 1990s.

    • Green Desert says:

@laalaa – maybe your friend knows this, but she should keep taking her prenatal vitamins after the baby is born. Everyone is different, but she’s less likely to lose hair if she keeps taking them. And many people just keep taking them indefinitely since they’re such great vitamins. Haha… I’m not a doctor so she may want to talk to her provider, but there’s so much info out there about this!!!

    • bananapanda says:

It’s prenatal vitamins give you great hair but it reverses after birth.

  9. Croft says:

    just click one

  10. Cdoggy says:

This hairdo just screams “migraine ahead” to me.

  11. Millennial says:

I just went through a 3-4 month period where I was losing several handfuls of hair every time I showered. It was beyond horrific.. I mean I know it’s just hair but it’s a sensitive period anyways.

    • L84Tea says:

I lost so much after my pregnancies that I had two literal bald spots right above my temples. It was agonizing trying to style it where they didn’t show. While it grew back, my hair has never been the same since being pregnant. It lost a lot of its oomph. 🙁

      • Millenial says:

Yes! I didn’t have a great hairline to begin with and I lost a bunch from my temple area postpartum. Makes putting my hair in a ponytail really interesting!

      • Pix says:

Oh I can still remember how awful I felt with the balding temples! That plus the baby weight, nursing on demand, and no sleep! Whew – I had no idea what was going on because no one ever told me what would happen postpartum. People really ought to give this girl a break about her appearance.

      • Lady Keller says:

I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one who had balding temples. My youngest is 20 mo old and I am still waiting for my hair to recover.

  12. SM says:

Yep. Her hair so so pulled that it looks painful. But that’s not necessarily because of pressure to appear less messy. First, yeah, I had a horrible hair loss after I gave birth. At one point when it started to grow back it looks as if I had two hair pieces, one from before giving birth and a buzz cut underneath it. It was terrible especially considering my hair was the best I ever had when I was pregnant. I can understand that just pulling it together makes sense in that sort of messy situation. Second of all. I have a naturally curly and messy hair. To avoid it I had a short cut for a while. And growing it out was a pain in the ass as I felt messy. And now once I grew it to the point I can pull it into a bun, I experience the great sensation of being clean. And it is at the same time everyone keeps complimenting me on my messy curly hair. I guess what I am getting at is that at times you just feel different with different hair. It may not look as good but pulling your hair tight may change how you feel about your self. Maybe she needed that too.

  13. liriel says:

No volume, not cute. She has great hair, extensions can count too. This hairstyle just doesn’t work because takes away from her pretty face. It’s like hair 0 size too small.

    • Perry says:

Sorry Liriel, she does beautiful, looks even younger better.

    • minx says:

I actually think the slicked back hair accents her beautiful face.

      • Perry says:

Exactly Minx, I mean it’s obvious Meghan is beautiful with loose hair or tied back hair. If you looked at the close ups she was absolutely breathtaking, haters gonna hate.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

        Agreed.

      • liriel says:

Haters? Preferring center or side part makes you a hater or not? It’s crazy what’s going on.

  14. samira teal says:

I was going to say the same. It’s easier to take care of a baby with pulled back hair. Although she’s going out, Meghan probably got used to it.

  15. Gail says:

She’s also a nursing mom. I agree that some volume around her face is flattering, but she looks beautiful regardless.
I loved her shoes at the Lion King premier, my favorite part of her outfit.

  16. Loretta says:

She looks so happy and in love, she’s glowing

  17. Peg says:

The British media would like to take credit for something, getting Meghan to change her hairstyle, is not due to their harassment.
When it comes to Meghan, everyone has an opinion, yesterday it was Doctors saying postpartum mothers are hot because of their hormones.
Most know that after having a baby some women lose hair and it is fragile.

  18. Perry says:

Nah you are all tripping, she still looks beautiful even with this hairstyle. You just want to tell her what to do, a woman has a right to wear her hair the way she likes it, especially a black woman. You may cry about the clothes, leave a black woman hair alone please.

  19. Cidy says:

I’m really not a fan of the slicked back hair. I really miss her side part AND her messy bun. But I understand evolving styles. I cannot pull off the messy bun look. My hair is asymmetrical with bangs, so when my hair is up it’s a non-purposful mess.

  20. Boxy Lady says:

No, she doesn’t need bangs. No, she doesn’t need more volume. No, she doesn’t need to stop doing a center part. No, she doesn’t need to stop pulling her hair back tightly.

    Just, no.

She knows her hair better than any of us. Let her do what she needs to do with it.

And I loved her dress at the Lion King premiere. I thought she looked chic.

    • Perry says:

Agreed Boxy Lady this is ridiculous, go and talk about how Kate and William are working less than a post-partum woman on leave!

  21. Becks1 says:

I assume the change in hairstyle was a combo of ease of style, wanting to try something different, weather/humidity, and post partum. (I lost so much hair post partum. It was disgusting lol.) Also, I don’t know if she has a hair stylist, or how she schedules appointments, so these hair styles seem like something she can do herself. (I assume she obviously has a hair stylist, but maybe its not someone who does her hair before events or something.)

I don’t love the slicked back look, but I don’t hate it either.

    • Betsy says:

      THIS.

ITS FREAKING HUMID! Messy buns become frizz balls in humidity.

She lived in LA, no humidity. We all look good with messy buns in LA. NYC in Summer – not sooo much.

Everyone is reading way to much into this.

  22. DS9 says:

Honestly, I’m getting damned tired of listening to people talk about Meghan’s hair. A huge part of it is being a 38 year old biracial woman with hair similar to Meghan’s

Wearing one’s hair down or even in a messy bun or any way other than the way God made it grow from this head takes work and planning.

You can prefer her hair however you like but honestly, this constant insistence you like it better than she’s deemed worthy of wearing it is tiresome and quite frankly a little racist.

Personally my edges do not cooperate well in heat and humidity and not for very long. What was wispy and piece-y when I left the house has reverted to its natural state within an hour. When I slick it back, you can start getting unwanted volume and wave in the crown within a few hours. A center part is personally easier for me to control, particularly when I don’t have a relaxer in.

Also, a center part bun was one of the easiest hairstyles for me to do without having to rewash, blowout, or straighten my hair again.

Now can we please stop talking about a black woman’s hair like she owes us a goddamned thing?

    • Iknow says:

This! Meghan’s hair is not naturally this straight. I don’t know what she is doing to her hair to keep it straight: is it blow-outs or a relaxer? I don’t know. But I agree, the policing of a black woman’s hair needs to stop. I know Meghan is biracial, but her hair is naturally curly. So much goes into it than wash and go and throwing it into a messy bun.

    • intheknow says:

Agreed DS9. It is quite disturbing how black women are judged for our hair, body type, etc. And if you are a black woman who looks like Meghan, some people MUST find something to chip away and take from her to make her ‘less’, in a way they are saying, ‘you are black, you shouldn’t be this beautiful, let me find some faults with you’. And this takes several forms in criticism, hair, weight, butt/booty, being depicted as aggressive, uppity, chip on shoulder and the list goes on and on and on.

No matter how she wears her hair, there will be people who will have something negative to say. I’d love to see how some of these critics leave their homes and how perfect their hair, make-up and clothing are.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

Round of applause. It’s so infuriating to watch people police this woman’s hair. Just like they do all of us black women.

    • MellyMel says:

      Thank you!!

    • Hotsauceinmybag says:

      A M E N to that.

I usually do the sleek look 3 days after my wash day, when my curls start to look busted. I do have to say personally I cannot pull off the slicked back look – but it gets the job done.

      • DS9 says:

I have a pixie now. I miss how my longer hair looked sometimes but I do not miss the upkeep and maintenance.

But even with a max of 3 inches up top, there are days and styles where I have to wear a headscarf to make it through my hot and humid commute without everything going to shit.

Meghan isn’t trying to sweat out that press.

        Bangs? FOH

      • Hotsauceinmybag says:

DS9. I wish I had the bone structure to pull off a pixie. A woman in my school course just got pixie/buzz mix because she was getting too hot with her shoulder length hair. She looks fab.

I have 3b & 3c hair and bangs are the worst decision I ever made as a teenager for my hair…

      • Moneypenny says:

Yes! I actually refer to this style as my “Day 3” hair!

    • Jan says:

Thank you so much for all of this! The hair policing has been pissing me off!

    • Moneypenny says:

Amen! I’m here thinking, “I wear my hair like this all the time.” It is not painful. The messy bun is work when your hair is not naturally straight. I can’t be bothered to blow out my hair anymore–too much work fighting my natural hair. This black woman is happy to have her giant curly hair pulled off her face (and usually off my neck) all summer!

    • Cate says:

I was thinking something along these lines also. I am not biracial, I am just a white woman with wavy/curly hair and getting the the kind of messy bun that Meghan used to favor is work even for me! I do have to spend some time with a flat iron to get those messy wisps she has sported in the past, and in humid weather…forget it, not without some kind of more intense treatment or product that I’m not willing to commit to!

It does look to my (not an expert) eye as if her hair is maybe a bit less relaxed/straightened now than it was, say, last year. I mean, it’s obviously still straightened but it doesn’t look *as* straightened. Who knows why that is. Could be a post-partum hair loss thing, maybe it’s extra humid this year compared to last year, maybe it’s a really time consuming process and she doesn’t have the time/inclination to keep up with it while also nursing a baby. I definitely broke up with my flat iron for a while when my baby was young.

Anyway, whatever is going on, her hair looks fine now (and looked fine before). All the styles she has sported have been unquestionably (in my mind) appropriate for the events she is going to, so beyond that….nothing to see here.

    • Green Desert says:

Oh my god DS9…thank you! Also biracial (black/white). I know that many people commenting here on her hair aren’t malicious, however I also think that many white people don’t understand textured hair (unless their hair is textured, which of course it can be). I don’t think many of them realize how it sounds to those of us who struggle or have struggled with our hair for them to tell us what looks good and doesn’t.

My hair is naturally curly (loose corkscrews) and I wear it long and curly now. However, growing up in a mostly white small town, I wanted to be like everyone else and have straight hair. I started relaxing my hair in 8th grade and continued until I was 27 (I’m 38 now). I tried so many things to make it look good, and looking back it never did. 🙂 For me quitting the relaxer was right, however many people relax their hair and it looks amazing. But we all know that society tells us women what we should look like, and for many black and biracial women society tells us our hair isn’t “normal” and that we need to change it.

Thanks for this post…I wasn’t thinking of it like this before with Meghan, but I do see the issues with some comments. Again, I don’t think most of the white people commenting mean anything by it, but it is good to share our stories and hopefully make people think about this a different way.

      • Green Desert says:

Also…if anyone wants to learn more about this, check out the Chris Rock documentary “Good Hair.”

    • GreenTurtle says:

Slow clap. Thank you for saying this.

    • kerwood says:

All I can say is, THANK YOU.

There are way too many people who think the Duchess of Sussex is public property. Great Britain didn’t purchase the Duchess of Sussex. Prince Harry, son of the heir to the throne, met her, fell in love with her and married her. They have a beautiful baby and are madly in love.

The Duchess of Sussex doesn’t owe ANYBODY perfectly fitting clothes or perfect hair. Her man is happy. VERY HAPPY. Her baby is happy. Those who can’t celebrate love and happiness should examine their lives.

  23. Nicole Robinson says:

Not only did my hair fall out post-partum, but it completely changed. It took me nearly 2 years to figure out how to get it healthy and how to style it. Things were rough for a while there.

  24. Iknow says:

Maybe Meghan has moved on from a messy bun and likes a tighter bun.

Also, can we discuss Meghan saying “they don’t make it easy” after Pherrell told both the Sussexes how much their union means in this climate?

    • kerwood says:

She was probably referring to all the racists in the world who are making life incredibly difficult for decent people.

Pharrell is right that Harry and Meghan are a symbol of love and happiness in a world where ugliness and hate is rampant.

Meghan’s right, the hateful don’t make it easy. But one look at Harry and Meghan’s faces shows that they’re not only ready to fight the good fight. THEY’RE WINNING!!!

  25. Lowrider says:

Ahahaahhaaaa… people complained and moaned about her loose tendrils and messy bun! Now they’re moaning about her scraped back hair and neat bun with every strand secured in place!

    So, what should she do?

  26. Sharonk says:

It seems her background is not suited to this lifestyle. Maybe he’s just indulged based on his trauma and background.

    • Becks1 says:

OMG. Are these the tumblr people that others talk about??

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

Girl take you a$$ back to the Daily Mail with this trolling BS. We don’t play that over here

    • BayTampaBay says:

@Sharonk, WTF are you talking about?

    • Olenna says:

@Becks1, yes. This is one of those troubled souls.

    • Nic919 says:

Wait so doing charity work which included giving speeches while holding down a full time job is not the appropriate background for being a royal? Oh sorry, I guess she should have just sat on her ass for a decade. That way we can praise her for handing out a trophy as if that’s not something a child could do with ease.

    • Starkiller says:

ANd what’s your “background”, precisely? Raised by wolves in a dumpster, if your comment is any indicator.

    • incognito08 says:

      @Sharonk: Girl, BYE!!!

    • kerwood says:

      @Sharonk: That might be true.

His brother married a woman because he wanted the family he never had and her family worked that angle. HARD. And nobody else wanted the gig.

The Duchess of Sussex’ background is actually quite well suited to her current lifestyle. She grew up with some of the tackiest people on earth, much like the people who can’t seem to get over a Black woman in the royal family. And where are those tacky-ass relatives now?

  27. Mtec says:

I always thought it was because before she got pregnant she would treat her hair with something to make it straighter. I remember once ppl started speculating she was pregnant, some pointed out they suspected it because we started seeing her hair change and become less slick/straight. I think now, still early in the postpartum period, she might still not be using those treatments cause it could be harmful to the baby while breastfeeding (?) i don’t know, but slicking it back so tight might be the only way she can tame any curls or w.e she doesn’t like, without the use of a treatment.

  28. MsIam says:

I like the slicked back bun, it looks elegant. And she has the face for it. I would also like to see her rock her curls too!

  29. Valiantly Varnished says:

I love the slicked back hair. It highlights her face. I also get why she has it slicked back. I’ve stated this before on another post about her slicking back her hair – she has naturally textured hair. Which can get frizzy in humidity. Sk she slicks it back to help control. Black women and women with naturally curly hair have been doing this forever. Either way – she looks beautiful with her hair in a neat bun, messy bun or down. She has the face and features to pull them all off.

  30. MellyMel says:

She literally had a messy bun last week. She just had that hat on top. I don’t get why this is news. And like others have said, stop policing black women’s hair!

  31. lobbit says:

I LOVE the sleek buns and ponytails. Messy updos photograph well but they really fall apart in real time.

  32. Citresse says:

The hair pulled back tight with the center part look is ok but it doesn’t look good at all when she adds a small hat…..remember when she was nurse Meghan late into her pregnancy?….Emergency!!!!!!

    • OuiOkay says:

That was cute though. It looked weird like a costume but she was also cute like a doll. Flattering hat for her I thought. Most of the royals hats including MM and KM’s hats and fascinators are not flattering , so the white nurse hat surprised me

  33. Bonnyday says:

Meghan wore her hair down to a long, hot basesball game just last week and it looked nice. She also wore it down to the polo match on a hot day. Clearly her style options aren’t limited by having given birth or having post-partum hair issues. I think a messier updo would have been more flattering but she likes the slicked back look sometimes which is her choice. I agree with those who dislike the center part.

  34. pamspam says:

Kaiser – not sure if someone already said this, but I think the actress you’re thinking of might be Selma Blair. I seem to recall her having major hair loss (and discussing it) after her son was born.

Sure more volume would be prettier but she can pull this off fine. Her face is pleasant, and her hair is still healthy looking. She looks very fresh and professional. I prefer it to the messy buns. I like to see women with “basic” styles like this sometimes, like why do we have to try soooooo much harder than men 365? It’s exhausting. Buns are so comfortable:)

  36. Hotsauceinmybag says:

I have never been pregnant so question – if she’s experiencing hair loss due to her pregnancy, surely having it pulled up wouldn’t keep it from actually shedding right?

In my head it’s similar to getting braids and keeping them in for 6-8 weeks – you still shed but none of that hair comes out until your braids come out… I feel like that still applies if you’re keeping your hair pulled into a ponytail or bun?

I blame JLO, this slick back hairdo is her thing and it took off. I am Canadian and Lainey Gossip and the gals on the Social all LOVE the slick backed, super-tight buns and all HATE bangs (Lainey actually regularly says it and judges women who don’t slick back and was very judgy about Megan’s loose dos). Megan’s BFF Jessica Mulroney also wears it like this – so the Toronto crowd she once lived amongst all LOVE this look and maybe she decided to adopt it as the Royals prefer it too.

I don’t personally, unless you are a ballerina, it looks like it hurts I find it shows to much forehead on most people and looks harsh not classy – but hey, to each their own – it’s her hair!

She is lovely however she wears her hair I find , very pretty face. Maybe it’s due to humidity – I have wavy hair and I know how it affects it – but I do wish a couple of loose tendrils would come out of it! as she looks softer with those, but again, that is just my preference!

  38. Sue Denim says:

she looks radiant but the black dress doesn’t fit her well on top, remembering her wedding dress was off there too, I say this as someone who struggles w that as well btw but fit really matters…

  39. Tabitha says:

I don’t think this hair is doing her any favours. Amazing how a haircut/styling can enhance or deplete a person…she is pretty with hair down and breezy.

  40. Texas says:

I have always loved slicked back hair because I can’t wear it. I don’t have the face. I would wear it everyday if I could rock it.

  41. DS9 says:

I think people are missing a fundamental difference in the way our hair often behaves vs most white folks.

For many of us, tendrils do not “come out” nor do we have to slick our hair back tight for it to lay smooth in a bun or ponytail. Nor does our hair naturally or easily have the volume at the crown white people are declaring would look so much “nicer”.

Stop expecting our hair to behave like yours.

  42. Mirage says:

I think this hairstyle is simply easier to achieve.
Meghan has naturally curly hair, so it’s probably quite a regimen to keep it as straight as she does. And the messy bun is actually quite difficult to pull off for non straight hair.

She’s a new mum and doesn’t want to spend hours on her hair at the moment.
My daughter was born a few hours before Megan’s.
My hair is the least of my priority.
And actually, just like for my first pregnancy, I don’t lose any of it.

  43. Janey says:

I think she looks lovely and think there is wayyyy too much criticism of her looks. The dress is sophisticated and seems on pointe for the occassion. I actually prefer this hairstyle to the messy bun, which I don’t think suits her hair texture.

  44. liriel says:

Frankly Kate and Meghan share something – we both spent sooo much time gossiping about their hair. To Kate – “do updo, sausage curls”, telling her to get a bob/shorter hair.
So let’s not pretend it’s racism. Btw, I’m in the minority but I like and enjoy “surfer’s hair”. not royal but I love boho-beach vibe.

    • DS9 says:

      “Let’s not pretend it’s racism…”

      Oh

      • liriel says:

I think talking about hair is petty. Where is racism when we talk about whether center or side part is better? we’re not even talking about hair pattern (btw, i’m not a POC but still have curls so don’t see a big deal or anything sensitive at all)

      • notasugarhere says:

DS9, some will never see the intrinsic racism in their own statements. liriel being a prime example.

      • Gingerbee says:

Agree Nota. Liriel, you cannot compare your curls to a black woman’s hair texture.

      • liriel says:

I actually get it. I saw on hair websites when anayzing if i’m 2b, 2c 3b and yeah there’s huge difference but all I was saying not everyone has great hair. I heard from my boss my hair is too frizzy, messy. nothing comparable of course. having said that I see a woman – Meghan who has/had everything – career, loving husband, baby. And I just think on almost everyone side part works better – that was my line and my line only. I just added about texture and idk, i saw beyonce’s kid – it’s fine and cute. I’ll however be forever no matter what I do always an “outsider”, would never blend into the crowd, all the jokes about my country. And what can I do..

  45. syl says:

Her hair looks nice. Shame the dress doesn’t fit better. Spoils the look, imo.

  46. MissAmerica says:

If she’s breastfeeding it is a lot easier to have hair up. Especially if she had to feed Archie like right before walking out of the door. Also, she probably doesn’t want to sit getting her hair done for ages when she’s caring for a newborn. I prefer her in messy buns and with her hair down too though. Slicked back is tough to pull off for most people. It’s so severe. She still looks gorgeous. Just takes awhile to start feeling like yourself again after having a baby. 🙁

  47. blunt talker says:

A messy bun look reminds me of a roll out of bed look.

    • liriel says:

Her messy bun wasn’t that messy or else I’m defending it because it’s my favourite!
