A STREET ranger from Worcester was left exhausted after completing a unique 3,000 mile charity challenge.

Martin Clews visited all of England and Wales' 92 Football League grounds, plus Paris Saint Germain's stadium, to raise cash for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

He smashed his target of completing the journey in 93 hours, by reaching the final ground - Arsenal's Emirates Stadium - after just 81 hours and 10 minutes.

Mr Clews, aged 53, was driven between the grounds by fellow members of the Citroen DS3GB Owners Club, and chose to support the hospital as it has cared for a club member's son who is being treated for a rare illness.

Mr Clews, who started working as a ranger on behalf of Worcester BID in 2013, said: "We started off with a puncture in Paris so that wasn't ideal.

"Most of the time it went quite smoothly, although the biggest problem was actually finding some of the grounds.

"We had a list of postcodes and for the older grounds you just had to look for the floodlights from miles away and head towards them.

"But the newer stadiums have got the floodlights built in so they were harder to find.

"We had to resort to looking at daytime shots on Google maps to match up where we were as some of the stadiums weren't were they were supposed to be.

"It's not as easy to find some of them as you might think, especially at night."

Seventeen-month-old Jensen Norris has Sturge-Weber Syndrome and Mr Clews said he wanted to show his appreciation for the hospital's fantastic work and raise money and awareness for the condition.

Sturge-Weber is caused by a port wine stain on the scalp which affects the brain.

This can lead to glaucoma, developmental delays and epilepsy.

The 93 grounds challenge was made especially taxing as Mr Clews - who was a passenger throughout - had to change cars on a regular basis.

This meant he had little time to shut his eyes and grab some much-needed rest.

He said: "I think I got about four hours sleep in total - if that - in the 81 hours because I was going in and out of cars with new people.

"I had slightly more chance to snooze when we were doing longer runs between the grounds.

"But I can't remember much of it."

Mr Clews said the marathon effort looks like raising around £2,500 but he is still welcoming more donations.

Anyone who wishes to donate should send a text message to 70070 with DSGB93 then the amount eg DSGB93 £5.
