MNPS Safe Return to School 2020-21

Families and students, as you may have heard, due to the increased spread and risk of COVID-19, MNPS has made the difficult decision to start school Aug. 4 in an all-virtual environment through at least Labor Day.

“This decision was not made lightly, but the risks to the health and safety of students and staff are too great at this moment for us to begin the school year with in-classroom instruction,” Director of Schools Dr. Adrienne Battle said. “I am confident that our teachers and support staff will be up to the challenge of providing a great education that meets the academic and social-emotional needs of our students in a virtual learning environment.”

The virtual learning program offered by MNPS will be greatly expanded from what was offered at the end of the 2019-20 school year, and the district is working this summer to get devices to every student. This decision will allow social distancing, mask mandates, and other measures to take effect and reduce the spread of COVID-19 before tens of thousands of students and staff return to our schools.

“I understand the uncertainty of this situation can be frustrating and cause anxiety,” Dr. Battle wrote in an email to families today. “We might not have the answer to every conceivable question by Thursday, because we’re still learning about the impact and the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic every day. But we promise to tell you what we know and to be transparent about the opportunities we have and the challenges we face in the year ahead. We know how much you count on MNPS, and we don’t take that lightly. Thank you for the trust you place in us every day, year after year. We consider it a privilege to serve you, and we look forward to navigating this unique school year with you.”
