Apply to Small Companies Early On to Build Career Momentum

When you’re just starting out in your career, it can be hard to get the attention of a big company. If you’re having trouble getting in on the ground floor, try starting out at a smaller company to pad your resume.

As business blog Entrepreneur explains, the career path from entry level position to higher up in a large company is hard enough. Coupled with getting the attention of a big company in the first place and this can be a challenging career path. By applying to smaller companies first, you can build on your existing experience and make yourself more appealing to the big ones.

Large companies get a ton of job applicants when a position opens. This reduces your chances of getting a job because you’ll lose out to someone who has more experience. The trick is to apply for companies with between one and 20 employees. You’ll stand out more in the pool of applicants, and the manager may be more willing to train you.

While a large company hasn’t heard of you, there’s a decent chance they’ve at least heard of their smaller competitors. Even if they haven’t, having a few years of experience in the field will be more appealing than being fresh out of college.
