A group of inspirational youngsters are organising a glitzy awards ceremony to celebrate the good work done in their community.

Young volunteers from the Renfew YMCA will roll out the red carpet for the town’s great and good after organising the inaugural Reach Awards to recognise the town’s community heroes.

The team of dedicated seven young people, aged between 12 and 16, were given nearly £5,000 of funding from the Big Lottery Fund to organise the awards, which have a glamour theme, at the Normandy Hotel on February 24.

Amie McDonald, 12, Shannon Logan, 12, Tamzin Gray,14, Sasha Gray,14, Kevin Logan,13, Chevonne Kelly, 15 and Josh Doherty, 16, want to honour some of Renfrew’s community champions and they are looking for your nominations.

Samatha Gillan, Renfrew YMCA youth development coordinator, says the group have taken the lead in every part of the planning process.

She said: “They were involved in the Renfrew Gala Day youth citizen of the year but they realised that there isn’t an scheme to celebrate the achievements of the wider community.”

“The group have been inspirational really, they have worked so hard on this.

“They have given 110 percent to get it.

“It will be fantastic for them to see the benefit of all that work when the ceremony actually happens and it all comes to fruition.

“They have been involved with everything, right from coming up with the idea in the first place, to the theme, categories and promotion.

“They will even be introducing and presenting it as well.

“So far they have put in 96 hours of volunteering for this, coming in a minimum of two evenings a week, so they are so committed to it.

“The young people that are involved have taken leadership roles, used team work skills and event management.”

The award categories are: unsung hero, good neighbour, sports award, bravery award, arts award, lifetime achievement award and excellence in education.

Samantha added: “The young people are looking for nominations for the awards so if you know anyone who you think deserves to be recognised, please get in touch.”

Local organisations such as, Engage Renfrewshire, Penny Lane Homes Renfew, Sprinkles Renfew, In Safe Hands, Edward McGreevy from Vision electrical and Comms LDT and Sweets and Treats Renfrew.
