The 5 Cheapest Places In Europe, According To TripAdvisor

The secret's out: Europe is extremely cheap right now. The euro is nearly equal to the dollar (for now, at least), and flight prices are largely on the decline, too. Hotels and Airbnb rental prices are affordable across the board, making this one of the best times to visit Europe that we've seen in years.

In fact, prices for an average trip (aka round-trip airfare and a hotel for a week) are down in almost every major European destination when you compare this summer's data with last year's, a TripAdvisor study found.

The study ranked 25 popular European cities based on airfare and hotel costs. Most cities showed a stunning price drop from last year: A one-week trip to Istanbul is 25 percent cheaper than it was last summer and Stockholm -- a notoriously pricey city -- is a whopping 23 percent cheaper.

American travelers might find Istanbul and Budapest less familiar than Europe's bigger power players like London and Paris. But while slightly more under-the-radar, these cities are stunning in their own rights with scenery, culture and great food to boot.

And if you want to take a cheap flight from less-mainstream Istanbul over to a heavy hitter like Rome, then that's okay, too. Prices are down pretty much everywhere, and airfare in Europe tends to be low.

With that, TripAdvisor's five cheapest places in Europe this summer are:

5. Prague, Czech Republic

Aside from being one of Europe's most visually stunning cities, Prague is a smorgasbord of beers, dumplings, candies and treats. You could spend days getting lost in ancient cobblestone alleys and exploring riverside bazaars.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a perfect summer destination, as it's famous for outdoor hot spring spas that draw young and old crowds alike. While you're not soaking in the sun, check out river cruises, museums and one of the largest synagogues in the world.

3. Krakow, Poland

Prices in Krakow are "weirdly low," as the backpacking pros at Price of Travel put it. Among the city's romantic squares and sprawling parks, you'll find buzzing coffee shops and authentic milk bars that dish up cheap yet filling meals.

2. Bucharest, Romania

AKA "Little Paris," this stunning city is dripping in ornate decor, and the comparisons to its French lookalike are obvious. What you won't find are French prices, especially in Bucharest's teahouses, parks and palace grounds.

1. Istanbul, Turkey

There's no shortage of striking architecture here, between the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and some spooky underground cisterns. Get lost in the Grand Bazaar, one of the biggest, busiest market mazes on Earth.
