There has been a “significant” increase in customers seeking insurance for items stored in safety deposit boxes after the Hatton Garden jewellery heist, according to the insurance company Assetsure. “A number of people who stored their jewellery and valuables in banks or secure facilities didn’t think it was possible for them to be stolen — this has now all changed,” says Bob Andrews, marketing director for the company, which puts the increase at more than double the usual inquiries that it would receive at this time of year.

According to Mr Andrews, some high-security storage facilities offer insurance, while others don’t. Harrods, for example, covers up to the value of £10,000 per box .
