Interview

April Brookshire – Toxic Bad Boy
Where are you from?
I’m from California, but currently live in Denver, CO.
Tell us your latest news?
Toxic Bad Boy, the third book and conclusion of the Beware of Bad Boy series was just released.
When and why did you begin writing?
I started off doing it for fun and to entertain readers on Wattpad. After my stories began getting millions of reads, I realized I could do this “for real” through self-publishing.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When my first book was released in 2011, Young Love Murder. It was amazing getting the first paperback proof in the mail.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I’d read other stories and think about the way I would’ve written it in regards to plot direction and character development. Eventually, I decided to write my own stories where I could choose what happens.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I tend to write in first person, past tense, but have also written in third person and present tense. I also sometimes switch point-of-views and try to always write my characters’ dialogue realistically.
How did you come up with the title?
The series is called Beware of Bad Boy (like Beware of Dog), so the first book it titled the same. The second and third book titles are also inspired by warning signs. Danger! Bad Boy is inspired by Danger! High Voltage and Toxic Bad Boy is based off of the various Toxic Hazard signs.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
To be happy, you have to put yourself out there and take risks. Also, don’t let others push you into your choices in life.
How much of the book is realistic?
One of the thoughts I had going into writing the series was that teens in fiction aren’t usually portrayed realistically. A lot of times, they have the personalities and interests of people much older (in a boring way). I think the teens in my books, though mature in some ways, still have the thoughts and feelings of real young people.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I lived in Denver for a few years as a teenager and my characters are experiencing the same thing, just 15 years later. High school, ballet classes and going to clubs are loosely based off my own experiences.
The hero of the story, Caleb, is a juvenile delinquent and has experience in youth corrections. I’ve known someone who was in trouble a lot as a teenager, he even spent time in juvie more than once. That same person was also a breaker in high school, competing with his crew. The heroine of the story, Gianna, is a b-girl in a crew.
What books have most influenced your life most?
I don’t know about actually influencing my life, but there are definitely books that stick with you and don’t fade into forgetfulness like others. Those include everything Kristen Ashley or Kresley Cole, Consequences by Aleatha Romig, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and anything on my Goodreads favorites shelf.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Kresley Cole is the author I look up to most. Seriously, she can do no wrong.
What book are you reading now?
I just finished Rough Justice by Sarah Castille and was thinking of starting Silver Bastard by Joanna Wylde next. (I’m on an MC romance kick right now)
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Tillie Cole is still fairly new and I’ve really liked her MC and mafia themed books.
What are your current projects?
Lots of stuff in the works, including the second Young Assassins book and an adult contemporary romance. The third Dead Chaos book will also be released this year.
What would you like my readers to know?

I aim to entertain.
