When Maya gets yet another call to retrieve her drunken roommate, her mind shows her a hot, amber-eyed Universe operative.

Once before, Ian failed to protect a sensitive from a brain-scrambling attack. He will not fail Maya . . . if it means using his talent—or his body—to stop a bullet.

Maya Wingfield was raised to trust no one—least of all the dueling U.S. and Russian paranormal agencies, Universe and Night Stars, who’d love to harness her mind-reading gift.

She thought Richmond a safe place to escape their influence and hide from a rising psychic malevolence that drove her out of San Diego. But when she gets yet another call to retrieve her drunken roommate, her mind shows her an amber-eyed Universe operative with an impenetrable net around his deepest secret—and a voice that sends shock waves of awareness down her nerve endings.

Maya’s curves and aquamarine eyes aren’t the only things that jolt Ian Sanderson’s mental shields, bringing sexual tension thrumming back to life. It’s a power his Universe-trained mind knows he shouldn’t trust. And a vulnerability that makes his telekinetic power burn in his palms to protect her.

But to Universe, she is just one of too many unanswered questions. A target for Whisper, a shadowy new group of paranormals with powers beyond anything Universe has ever seen. Once before, Ian failed to protect a sensitive from a brain-scrambling attack. He will not fail again . . . if it means using his talent—or his body—to stop a bullet.

An Interview with Claire Davon

Welcome to JB’s Bookworms with Brandy Mulder
Thank you for having me!

Tell us about your newest book.
Maya Wingfield is a psychic who has been taught all her life to hide what she is. When she is forced to flee San Diego she wings up in Richmond, Virginia. There she finds out that the government agency she never wanted to join, as well as the other, warring, agency, both have targeted her to join their groups. In addition there is a third shadow organization that nobody knows much about who has their own reasons for wanting Maya. Her decision is made easier, and harder, by British telekinetic Ian Sanderson.

Writing isn’t easy. What was the most difficult thing you dealt with when writing your newest book?
Realizing when the world-building wasn’t strong enough. I thought I was done with the book and had even sent it out to publishers but when I got the feedback from an editor I really hit it off with that she didn’t think the book was compelling enough I took a hard look at the book and realized she was right. Hence the shadow group Whisper and the unknown reasons they exist was born.

Tell us a little bit about your writing career.
I’ve been a writer since I was very young. My friends and I used to write bad fan fiction back before that was a thing and I continued through high school and college when I started to write original stories. I have been up and down through the years and stopped for a while twelve years ago when I won a contest but failed to get any publishing traction. I went back six years ago when I told myself “this is ridiculous. You love to write, get back to it.” At that point I dusted off some of my old stories and plunged back in.

They say Hind-sight is 20/20. If you could give advice to the writer you were the first time you sat down to write, what would it be?
Recognize that your first stuff won’t be as good as you think it is. Also recognize that the worst thing you can do is stop. Keep writing, writing, writing and hone your craft. Don’t be afraid to discard something that doesn’t work and no matter what you do, never give up.

What was your most difficult scene to write?
I’m an early morning writer so sometimes the, erm, saucier scenes are difficult to write when I am still taking those first sips of coffee. Otherwise I think fight scenes for me are challenging, especially when there are many people involved. It’s like a choreographed dance and I have to make sure that all the body parts are accounted for.

Are themes a big part of your stories, or not so much?
That depends on the genre I’m writing in. For my paranormal books themes are definitely a huge part of the books, but they also tend to be series. Each one of my series—the Universe Chronicles, my budding shifter series and the Elementals series all have overarching themes/world building. For my contemporary stories there tend not to be those themes.

What are you working on now?
The third book in my Elementals’ Challenge series is at the proofreader’s getting one final polish. Then it will go up for pre-order. For anyone who follows that series, this is Ondine’s story where the newest Elemental has to come to grips with facing Challenge when it was unexpected, and she isn’t ready.

Is there a release date planned?
I am aiming for an October 1st release, and am confident of that date.

Who is your favorite character from your own stories, and why?
Most writers were readers as children. What was your favorite book in grade school? I thought a lot about this question because I have consumed so many books over the years. My most vivid memory in grade school is of the two years we spent living in the country where I volunteered at the school library. I remember reading all the Nancy Drew books I could get my hands on, and then looking for any similar books, like the Hardy Boys. Later on I was drawn to science fiction and fantasy, but in those grade school years the Nancy Drew books are the ones that stand out.

What are your plans for future projects?
So many! I am a short story writer as well so I am always working on something and have a few stories coming out this year in various anthologies. In terms of novels I have two more books in the Elementals series to edit for a total of five in that series. Of course more Universe Chronicles series books are in the works—two are in first draft form and more will come. I want to get back to the shifter series as well. I have a dozen or more contemporaries to go back to but for now I am editing my rich Greek businessman book. No doubt there will be more, but that’s all for the moment.

Is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
Thank you for having me! I love to hear from people so if you have any questions, want more information or just want to say hi, please feel free to drop me a line!

Good luck with your newest release, and thank you for being with us today.

About the Author

Claire can’t remember a time when writing wasn’t part of her life. Growing up, she used to write stories with her friends. As a teenager she started reading fantasy and science fiction, but her diet quickly changed to romance and happily-ever-after’s.

A native of Massachusetts and cold weather, she left all that behind to move to the sun and fun of California, but has always lived no more than twenty miles from the ocean.

In college she studied acting with a minor in creative writing. In hindsight she should have flipped course studies. Before she was published, she sold books on eBay and discovered some of her favorite authors by sampling the goods, which was the perfect solution. Claire has many book-irons in the fire, most notably her urban fantasy series, The Elementals’ Challenge series, but writes contemporary and shifter romances as well as.

While she’s not a movie mogul or actor, she does work in the film industry with her office firmly situated in the 90210 district of Hollywood. Prone to breaking into song, she is quick on her feet and just as quick with snappy dialogue. In addition to writing she enjoys animal rescue, reading, and movies. She loves to hear from fans, so feel free to drop her a line.
