Description

A Professional Development Opportunity for Social Studies and Spanish Teachers Interested in Working with Primary Sources

How do we decide who is on the right side of an armed conflict? When do we stand up for what we believe in? What are our obligations in the face of injustice, as individuals and as a nation? These are the kinds of questions that the United States and its citizens faced when, in 1936, a Nazi and Fascist supported military rebellion tried to overthrow the democratically elected government of Spain. Although the United States government did not intervene in Spain, almost 3,000 Americans fought as volunteers against fascism, among them hundreds of Ohioans. This professional Development Workshop for high school teachers in Social Studies and Spanish presents a compelling set of primary sources related to American involvement in Spain, as well as standards aligned lesson plans, for teachers of Social Studies and Spanish.

Please note: This institute also includes one 90 minute online session (to view a film) prior to the event date and one 4-hour online experience related to evaluating an ALBA lesson plan after the event date.

Participating teachers may earn up to 12 Continuing Education Units, and optionally receive nondegree graduate credit.
