About the author

Roz Warren, “the world’s funniest librarian,” writes for The New York Times, The Funny Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Jewish Forward and The Huffington Post. And she‘s been featured on the Today Show. (Twice!) Roz is the editor of the ground-breaking Women’s Glib humor collections, including titles like The Best Contemporary Women’s Humor, Men Are From Detroit, Women Are From Paris and When Cats Talk Back. Our Bodies, Our Shelves is her thirteenth humor book. Years ago, Roz left the practice of law to take a job at her local public library “because I was tired of making so damn much money.” She has no regrets.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024This is a lovely book of (mostly) gentle humor that most people will enjoy. Will it make you laugh out loud? Maybe not. Will it have the person reading next to you in bed occasionally look over at you and go, "Now what?" after you snort? And then you have to read a passage to her? In at least one case, yes!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2023OK, maybe Roz Warren can because she has more genuine writing talent than most of us have talent of any kind. If this book doesn't get you chuckling or induce a deep, belly-busting chortle, you have serious issues. You probably need a therapist more than a book. Though, this book is therapeutical!
Just the chapter titles are enough to pique your interest to read them and illicit a chuckle, such as “A Num Walks into a Library,” “Freeze! It’s the Library Police,” or “The Librarian and the Porn Star.”
I keep this on my desk for those days when I can't face the world without a laugh or two to make it through.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2023My last library card was for Buder Library in St. Louis, Missouri. It was ages ago.
Growing up, the library was my sanctuary.
I adored the peace and quiet, the comforting aroma of old books, and the oversized-wooden chairs. They provided a reassuring foundation as I traveled to new worlds the books offered me.
Reading Roz Warren’s Library Humor book instantly transported me back to those glorious days of library refuge and peace.
Although I’ve never found condoms, cherry-flavored or otherwise, in the library books I’ve checked out, I loved all the examples of odd bookmarks Roz humorously shared.
Condom bookmarks are just one tiny fun-filled fact Roz included in her entertaining tales about her life in the stacks.
Like Roz, I never waste time with a book that doesn’t grab me.
This one had me from the very first paragraph. I laughed, sighed, and shed a tear or two. I also wrote notes, bought 2 new books I hadn’t considered before, and a rainbow bracelet. All because Roz recommended them.
Should you read this book? Yes, indeed. It’s worth every joy-filled minute.

Reading Just Another Day at Your Local Public Library by Roz Warren just made me want to read more by this humorist author! Our bodies, our shelves, has some repeated stories from Just Another Day but many of them are original to this book, and we do get a little bit more insight into the author and her day as a librarian. A "just for fun" read that is guaranteed to make you smile if not laugh out loud...

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024I will never look at a librarian in the same way. I had no idea their serene nature masked a knowledge and understanding of strange people doing odd things with borrowed books. Librarians may be quiet people (as they expect you to be) but this book showed they deal with extremely odd scenarios and would love to be able to curse out bad library patrons.
Roz may not recognize me [Prosopagnosia, a great chapter] but, when I next see her at the librarian desk, I’ll be grinning at bit too widely now that I’ve read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2015A lively read. Several essays that go far to dispel the myth of the repressed librarian. You will end up reading them all straight through, but the essay format permits an interruption. You'll be back as soon as you can. Get it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024In this collection of short stories and essays, the author shows that she understands libraries, in a way that shows us the unexpected humor they house.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2015Our Bodies, Our Shelves: A Collection of Library Humor is a treat for book lovers and librarians alike. Roz gives us a behind the scenes look at the life of a librarian; the good, the bad and the funny. Find out about The Moving Man, the guy who creates chaos by hiding books. Discover why condoms are inappropriate bookmarks. Get the inside scoop on librarians who party with porn stars.
Also, Roz proudly stands behind the First Amendment and tells funny stories about the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and the best place to stash it.
Witty Roz humor, the original Library Comedian! It’s the perfect summer read!!
