About the author
[Visit Bill at www.maxgrace.com ]
Bill is the son of a hard working, middle class Italian/Hillbilly family (he says that lovingly) and the product of a Chicago public school education (he says that proudly). His upbringing in a small, fundamentalist church led him to an early decision to devote his life to God. It wasn't until young adulthood that he began to appreciate how much God was devoted to him.
Surrounded by the high energy and vivid personalities of an urban jungle, Bill received a street-level education on human nature. His early love of reading, his hunger for the Bible and theology, and his early struggles with legalism and self-worth form the foundation for Bill's writing. He also has a deep love of Chicago sports teams and Chicago pizza.
Bill entered full-time ministry at age 20 as a children's and youth pastor. He served for eight years before planting a church in Chicago and becoming its senior pastor. During that sixteen-year ministry, Bill finished his seminary degree, urban ministry training, and his doctorate. He met and married his wife, Margi, and started his family... two kids, two dogs, one hamster, and one fish that survived.
After a two-year stint as a suburban teaching pastor, Bill and his family headed to the snow-capped mountains and pristine lakes of northern California, where Bill serves as the senior pastor of a rapidly growing Church.
Bill has established a reputation for speaking to the mind in ways that touch the heart. He enjoys delivering God's Word with both depth and practicality. He aims to encourage instead of tear down. He strives to free others from guilt, shame, and legalism, and help them discover life and love through God's amazing grace.

Bill's favorite Bible verse is:
Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD.
(Jeremiah 9:23, 24, NKJV).

Though I was raised in the church my entire life, and have been a believer for nearly 4 decades, this book took me to depths of truth I had not considered. It thoroughly captures and engages both your mind and emotions. By default each of us is raised in an environment of "what we should do", with a worldview of earning/deserving whatever results we get in life. Somehow that thought pattern doesn't leave us once we believe. Grace Intervention creatively enables us see that God's amazing grace is so much more incredible than we have ever imagined, so much bigger than our petty worldview. It reminds us that He loves His children and lavishes His grace toward us because of who He is, not because of anything we do or can do for Him.
Assisting us to get our psychology to match theology, Grace Intervention lifts our eyes to the astonishing truth that all who have trusted Christ's work on the cross to bring them into a right relationship with God, trusting His finished work at Calvary to pacify God's holy wrath against sin, can rest in full assurance that God's love and grace extends to them. Eternally.
I wish I'd purchased a hard copy for myself so I could take notes! This book is on my "must read again soon" list - even though I just finished it less than 4 weeks ago.
Because legalism comes in many subtle forms, the author exposes both traditional legalism and neo-legalism. He also responds to typical objections to grace using Scripture and examples. He defines grace as “the unmerited favor of a non-lenient God” because he doesn’t want people to confuse grace with leniency. In other words, it’s not that God is overlooking our sin because our sin cost Him dearly.
Grace Intervention reaches into our lives to the heart of our struggle to earn God’s blessings or keep the rules. The author explains that it’s not what we do for God—the arrows going up from us to God—that matters. Rather it’s what God does for us—the arrows going down from God to us—that is the source of grace and power in our lives.
If you need a fresh infusion of grace, pick up a copy of Grace Intervention and soak in these truths all over again.
This review first appeared (with additional book quotes) on my blog, ChristyBower.com.
This book challenged me to just rest in God's grace... This is difficult because I feel like I constantly never measure up, and naturally (often without thinking about it) I try to please God by DOING.
I want that work to come; I want to see God's fruit in my life, but I need to make sure I soak up God's grace first. Bill's excellence in explaining God's grace and our slant toward legalism is what drew me into this book. His explanation of how God's grace continues to unfold in our lives is what kept me reading.
It will always be a life journey spending time with God, his Word, and discovering more of his truth. This will help you get a pretty uncommon, (maybe even forgotten) fresh perspective on God's grace and salvation amidst a sea of legalism.
This book is not one of them. This book explains how close God is to each of US, and how little our actions have anything to do with that reality.
There are academic sections in some chapters for those who enjoy the intellectual engagement of theological discourse, and the arguments are presented deftly and with good humor. But the great beauty of this book is the simple, profound result of that theology: if you have trusted in Christ's work on the cross to bring you into a right relationship with God, then you can rest in the fact that God loves you as He loves His own Son. No amount of good (or bad) behavior can change that truth.
