Why this petition matters

Started by NC4ERA

"Born female, not one 'Woman American' has ever drawn a breath fully equal under her own constitution." - Marena Groll, NC4ERA

Over half this nation identifies as female. Yet, our lives, our liberties and our pursuits of happiness are still not equally revered. We bear the brunt of that inequality every time we enter a court room to challenge discrimination on account of sex and the roll back of our rights. We must have an Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

In cases charging discrimination, unlike race, sex is not specified as a suspect class invoking the highest level of scrutiny under the 14th Amendment. As our country struggles for racial justice, women of every race fight for justice without comparable constitutional recourse on account of sex.

It's time to write women into the U.S. Constitution. On March 5, 2015 NC Representative Carla “Fearless” Cunningham was joined by NC Representatives Mickey Michaux, Susan Fisher and Beverly Earle sponsoring H166 to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

The bill is in Judiciary 1 Committee. These 10 men and 1 woman hold the history of women in their hands. Let them hear you. Sign this petition advocating that H166 be fully supported and passed out of committee favorably. The time for an Equal Rights Amendment is now.

This petition will also be hand delivered by NC4ERA (North Carolina for Equal Rights Amendment) and NC NOW (North Carolina Organization for Women) to NC Representative N. Leo Daughtry, Committee Chair

The future is up you. Write your history or others will write it for you.

The Equal Rights Amendment

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.
