Many sales organizations are now using video job interviews as part of their recruiting process. It’s an effective way to conduct initial interviews before requesting candidates meet with them in person. This is particularly effective for candidates living out of town or when companies are hiring for remote positions.

However, once the camera turns on, many people have a tendency to freeze up, feel uncomfortable, and act differently. The truth is video job interviews are almost identical to phone and in-person interviews, and sales candidates should treat them as such.

Tips to Dominate Your Next Video Sales Interview

Use these tips from our sales recruiters to dominate your next video sales job interview:

1. Test the technology:

One thing unique about video job interviews is the technology. Before the interview, take the time to become familiar with the technology used. Make sure it is working correctly, and make sure you know what to do if an issue arises during the actual interview. Test the video feed, internet connection, volume and other components.

2. Treat it like an in-person interview:

A video job interview should be treated the same as an in-person interview. You will be asked similar questions. You will be sitting in front of a job interviewer. The only difference is you are in separate locations.

3. Be yourself:

Don’t worry about the camera. Just be yourself. Many candidates tend to freeze up during video interviews. You can avoid this by recording a few practice runs and watching them back. Look for areas to improve and present yourself better. Are you looking at the camera? Are there things in the background that should be removed? Is the lighting and sound quality good?

4. Dress the part:

Don’t overlook the importance of dressing up. Wear the same attire you would wear for an in-person interview. Remember, you only have one chance to make a great first impression. So, blow them away and present your best self.

5. Eliminate distractions:

Choose a location that is free from distractions. A coffee shop is probably not the best place. Choose a quiet area with a good internet connection. Remember to turn off your phone and programs running in the background on your computer.

With all of the above in place, you will be ready to dominate your interview just as you would if it were an in-person interview.
