A Heartfelt Prayer for Our Nation on Election Day

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lᴏʀᴅ require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

Lord, how you love each one of your children. I pray for your goodness and mercy to flow through this nation. May individuals from sea to sea cast their votes for earthly leadership and then cast their cares and needs upon you and you alone.

Jesus, release me from the fear that today changes everything…or that today changes nothing. The truth remains the same: Every morning I rise in the face of unknowns and am called to follow the One who knows the way. This has not changed. This will not change.

This season offers an invitation that I accept with a renewed sense of possibility and responsibility. More than ever before, I will come to you on behalf of the leaders here and throughout the world. And, more than ever before, I will commit to being your hands, feet, ears, eyes, heart, and help for those people you place in my life.

When my heart aches for the needs of our nation’s children and elderly, may I draw from the gifting you’ve placed within me and serve the least of them from your holy well of grace.

As my voice rises in support of education, may I also rise to teach another with your wisdom and patience.

If I feel stuck and unheard, may I attentively listen to the dreams and heart stories of another.

Should physical trials cause me or my neighbor pain and financial struggle, I pray to recognize your healing in the opportunity to expand our capacity for compassion and generosity.

When I am not sure how to make ends meet, may I embrace the beginnings of deeper faith.

When I worry about the future, may I journey along the wide path of your peace while praising you for the companions of gratitude, joy, and enduring hope.

Giver of Life, I pray that every person receives the freedom and support to fulfill the purpose you have designed for them. Inspire us to encourage one another in this pursuit so that we shine as a nation strengthened in unity and blessed in our willingness to reach out and lift up each of your children to your good work and will.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
