I own Dinosaur planet series, and the planet pirates. I knew I had read a book about Dr. Lunzie's other adventures and tracked the book down on Amazon. I happily devoured the story again, and am glad to have the complete collection now. I suggest you read it after Dinosaur planet and before Planet pirates.

The Death of Sleep (1991) is the second SF novel in the Planet Pirates subseries of the Ireta sequence, following Sassinak. The initial volume in this sequence is Dinosaur Planet.

In the previous volume, everybody was celebrating the end of the year. Sass and Caris were enjoying their first time celebrating. They were walking and running through the crowds.

The senior tech on duty at the spaceport was also celebrating. When the pirate ship hailed him in his home language and dialect, he was confused. He couldn't find the ship's identification in the computer.

The pirate ship came closer as he fumbled with the computer. Then the computer definitely flagged the ship as a pirate. It issued a warning to the whole community.

By this time, Sass was babysitting her siblings while their parents went to an adult only party. Caris came over to help her. When they heard the warning, Sass opened the locked closet and pulled out weapons issued by the FSP.

The pirate ship was firing on the spaceport as they hurried to the Block Recreation Center. The adults were rushing out of the center as they approach. Sass's parents met them and grabbed the weapons.

In this novel, Lunzie Mespil is a medical doctor. She is also the mother of Fiona.

Shof Scotny is working on an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. He is a certified genius, but lacks tact.

Pomayk Eglar is working on a law degree. She treats Shof as if he is a younger brother.

Theodor Jones is a caseworker at the EEC. He was a former civilian specialist in research for the FSP.

In this story, Lunzie and Fiona are living on a planet of Tau Ceti. Lunzie is taking a job to pay the air tax, but can't take Fiona with her. She arranges for Fiona to live with a colleague and goes to work as a doctor on Platform 6 among the asteroids.

Her ship wanders into a group of converging asteroids and she has to use an escape pod. She was the only crew member in the pod. She puts herself into cold sleep to await rescue.

Sixty-two years later, a Thek leads a mining scout to her pod. It had collided with an asteroid and lost communications. The mining scout tows her pod back to Platform 6.

Lunzie learns that she need some courses to bring her up to date in medical techniques. She also needs to find Fiona. She cannot determine which course to pursue first.

Lunzie gets her first data on Fiona from a Tri-D program. Fiona's name was listed as a colonist on Phoenix. Now a heavy-worlder group has claimed the planet.

The mining company gave her back pay to the time she was in cold sleep. She has enough money to catch up on her medical skills and she will need to wait from more information on Fiona. She decides to return to her prior medical school for the refresher courses.

Since interstellar communications are expensive, Lunzie tries to save as much money as she can. She lives in the least expensive housing in the university. She has two roommates, Shof and Pomayk,

Her roommates soon involve Lunzie in their affairs. She becomes one of the Gang of thirty students of various ages, schools, and backgrounds. She also becomes interested in the Tri-D news programs.

This tale brings Tee into her life. He requests information about Fiona from FSP sources. He also becomes a close friend of Lunzie.

Two years later, Lunzie moves in with Tee. The next installment in this sequence is Generation Warriors. Nye has also authored the new Imperium series.

Highly recommended for McCaffrey & Nye fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of suspended animation, medical doctors, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

The Death of Sleep may be my favorite Anne McCaffrey book. It's hard to say. It's definitely the one I've read (and listened to) the most. It has an old-school style. If you like Asimov, you'll probably love this.

I read a review on here that the authors don't develop the characters very well. One, that's kind of a style. And two, I think it's kind of the point. Lunzie appreciates the people in her life, though most of them are fleeting, which is out of her control.

I think everyone should read this book, regardless of whether they end up liking it.

I read the other reviews before buying this book, so I can't say I wasn't warned. Others have given good summaries, so I won't repeat. This book had an interesting story to tell, but it was shallow. Characters are not fully developed. The poor protagonist Lunzie is repeatedly beaten down, and it eventually became hard to sympathize when the authors obviously did not care about her. I have read the first four books in the series, but I won't bother with the last one. Waste of time.
