Redemption's Edge

Rate this book
Dax Pelletier is ready for a new life, far away from the one he left behind in Savannah following the South’s devastating defeat in the Civil War. The ex-Confederate general wants nothing more to do with commanding men and confronting the tough truths of leadership.

Rachel Davenport possesses skills unlike those of her Boston socialite peers—skills honed as a nurse in field hospitals during the Civil War. Eschewing her northeastern suitors and changed by the carnage she’s seen, Rachel decides to accept her uncle’s invitation to assist him at his clinic in the dangerous and wild frontier of Montana.

Now a Texas Ranger, a promise to a friend takes Dax and his brother, Luke, to the untamed territory of Montana. He’ll fulfill his oath and return to Austin, at least that’s what he believes.

The small town of Splendor is what Rachel needs after life in a large city. In a few short months, she’s grown to love the people as well as the majestic beauty of the untamed frontier. She’s settled into a life unlike any she has ever thought possible.

Thinking his battle days are over, he now faces dangers of a different kind—one by those from his past who seek vengeance, and another from Rachel, the woman who’s captured his heart.

tl;dr It started off decent, but just dragged and dragged and dragged. The romance was actually the worst part about it, and this is a romance novel.

not tl;dr:

I liked the concept from the description, and going in it had a decent start. Nothing that really set it apart for me, but still pretty nice nevertheless.

The scenery and set up for all the characters journeys was fun and interesting (as well as sad in the obvious places). It gave us time to get to know our heros as individuals before they all come together. I almost wish there had been just a touch more time with them apart, but it wasn't too bad.

The switch between perspectives of various characters is a little jarring at first and took me a while to get used to it. There wasn't anything separating the paragraphs to make it visually obvious POV changes. Every once in a while it shook me out of it, but for the most part I was able to work with it. Similarly with time passage. Sometimes it would just jump ahead and fumble me for a second.

I was a little disappointed in the telling and not showing issue that was rather prevalant throughout. Especially when it came to the interactions between Dax and Rachel. I didn't /feel/ any chemistry despite being told that there was some. When reactions were explained, they typically happened after the fact. (After they had a conversation or had some encounter.) I would have liked to have /seen/ something during their encounters /as/ it was happening.

The mini stories within the story were a bit confusing to see. Minor, and I mean minor, characters suddenly had subplot love stories thrown in and it felt awkward and misplaced. It was a sudden switch of perspective and info dump on characters we never knew about, have no reason to care about, and likely would never see again. (Perhaps they'll come up in the sequels, idk, but I feel like they could've been handled better. It was if I was suddenly reading a different book for a few pages.)

The pace of this is quite slow, which works for quite a bit of things, basically most everything except for the relationship between Rachel and Dax. Because of the rest of the plot moving at a realistic and reasonable rate, the relationship has to be drawn out to fit that. (Well, I'm sure it didn't /have/ to be, but the author chose to do that, which could be done well in some circumstances.) Unfortunately the way it's written is very weak. Instead of using up that extra time to build a budding friendship or romance, having the characters learn about one another and have dialogue, it's insta-love but in a "no, we mustn't" sense. Every single time our heroes think of each other, they have to remind themselves that they can't, that the relationship wouldn't work. It's repetative and annoying to read. I'd much rather have that time spent elsewhere.

I find myself looking forward to times where our main heroes are not together or where we're not following Rachel (as she starts off so interesting and strong willed, driven to make her life her own, only to turn into the standard love interest who's suddenly weak and swoons constantly for our hero). Dax changes into something similar as well. As an individual, he's intelligent, brave, quick witted, and patient. With her, he turns into the cliche male lead--having to be "the man", dominant, overly sexual, crowding Rachel's space, etc.

"I just helped kill two people and their bodies are in the other room. Do you want to go out to dinner with me?" - Hero

"No thanks." - Heroine

'No' must mean she doesn't really know what she wants. I should keep pressuring her to agree. "Are you absolutely sure????" >:(((

My helpless female body can no longer say no. "Fuck it, let's kiss." - Heroine

Yup...real sexy.

This is what I mean by the awkwardness. And it's ONLY around the relationship. Everything else is written great! (Minus the tell not show.) But these two together are just...it's a big turn off, to say the least.

“Most women in Savannah fretted about their weight. I don’t suppose that worries you.” He picked up his fork and took a bite.

“I guess not because I never give it a thought.”

Thank god. A novel where a female character doesn't moan about her weight. (This isn't sarcasm btw. I hate that trope.)

Dax had been warned more than once about getting to close to his men.

Spelling mistake.

Okay, so I took over a week off from reading it (I got super busy) and I just can't find myself actively wanting to return to it. The romance just DRAGS like no tomorrow. The "will they won't they" got old super fast, and the two of them just kept pulling it along. If our hero (Dax) was so headstrong about not staying and not wanting to get into a relationship, then why play with this poor woman's feelings? He kept visiting her, making out with her, and being all Edward Cullen about it with the "oh but I'm not staying, I'm serious, I'm going to leave you" *proceeds to continue kissing her* "I swear, I'm gonna dump you and break your heart, we can't be together" *dry humps her* Like bro just get out.

I just can't anymore. The book has gone stale. Nothing new happens, things just repeat themselves. Literally.

Hero wants heroine, can't be with her.
Some dude gets shot, hero gets mad, can't do anything about it.
Hero kisses heroine, but oops he has to leave.
Some dude gets shot, hero gets mad, can't do anything about it. (This is a different dude, btw.)
"I love you, but we can't be together."

I'm tired and I'm bored and I'm pissy about the lead hero being a giant baby. Sorry, couldn't finish this. Shame since it was technically well written, just had telling and not showing, weak plot, and weak leads. x'D I didn't hate it though, thus the 2/5 stars instead of 1/5.

A Civil War veteran and his brother inherit a ranch. She's moved from Boston society to help her doctor uncle. Will an instant attraction and danger bring them together or tear them apart. Can he over come his past to keep the woman he loves or will it come between them?

Dax Pelletier isn't staying in Georgia and wants to become a Texas ranger. His brother Luke won't let him go alone so he tags along. Working as Rangers they're in pursuit of a group of outlaws along with their friend and fellow ranger Pat Hanes. When Pat is shot and a promise is made to return him to his ranch in Montana. Dax thinks they'll take him to Montana and come back and continue as rangers. When they arrive and talk to Pat's banker its revealed that the Pelletier brothers are now the owners of their dead friends ranch. Dax and Rachel meet when he takes Luke to the doctor after a sudden illness. The brothers aren't at the ranch long when trouble starts being coming a constant threat. A former member of Dax's troop of Civil War soldiers, who deserted is working for a local rancher. They're offered to be bought out by a local rancher, but turn it down. Dax and Rachel start seeing each other and can't stay away. She's hurt when he tells her he's not going to stay in Splendor. More attempts are made on his hired hands and Dax decides to stay until it's all figured out especially when he sees how much Luke enjoys living there. They confront the local rich rancher who's wanting their land. A few days long trip brings an old friend back into the Pelletiers life. They go looking for a sheriff to the town of Splendor since they've got more trouble. Rachel isn't thrilled with Dax, when he tells her that they can see each other but he's still leaving and going back to Texas. They have a couple of passionate encounters that only cement their feelings for each other. Since, Dax is leaving she comes up with a plan to get a mail order groom. Dax gets jealous when the friend of the blacksmith starts taking Rachel out to supper. Rachel and her uncle get word that her parents want to come for a visit. They must spend time out at the Pelletier's ranch when a couple of their hired hands are hurt. Her uncle comes up with a plan to visit out lying people in the area to bring them medical help. The outlaws who the Pelletiers and Hanes were chasing in Texas come looking for revenge because Dax had killed one of their own. They infiltrate the ranch. Also, the deserter soldier has taken it on himself to get rid of the Pelletiers because they know his past. The rival rancher finally realizes what his hired man is up to and cuts ties. The deserters realize they've been found out and go into hiding. While making the rounds they are taken hostage by the outlaws from Texas. Dax and the sheriff, Luke and their hired hands are tracking the outlaws and follow them to the neighboring ranch. They take care of the outlaws and Rachel is used against Dax. He still is planning on leaving but Luke won't buy Dax's half of the ranch. They take a trip to a near by town where they see the ad Rachel has placed in the paper for a husband. It makes Dax realize that he can't live without her and needs to win her back. He with Luke's help responds to her ad using a different name. She is surprised to see him and can't figure out why he's there until he explains and proposes. She accepts and after her parents arrive they hold a wedding.

Shirleen Davies keeps you on the edge of your seat with danger coming from every direction. A passion that can't be denied and that feelings can be immediate under the right situations. Over coming a troubled past to find an all consuming love can over come everything. I look forward to reading or listening to more of Ms. Davies Redemption Mountain series. I've go some catching up to do. Can't wait to read Luke Pelletier's story.

This was my first Western Romance and I have to say I loved it. There was a lil bit everything. There was action, love, humor, sadness, and happiness. I was worried about the length and how a western could be interesting till the end but it kept my interest and the end was 🔥. I would recommend and I am looking forward to reading more of this series.

The wild west is a good place to escape. It's a place where people start fresh after the horrors of the Civil War, and a place where new lives begin. Dax, a former General in the Confederate Army, seeks a new life away from the war-torn south. With his brother, Luke, he becomes a Texas Ranger, tracking down criminals and bringing them to justice. Tragedy and destiny collide to bring Dax to Montana, and though he insists his future is in Texas, life might have other plans.

After working as a nurse for the Union Army, Rachel is unwilling to resume her life as a Boston socialite. Courageous and down-to-earth, Rachel isn't like the people she grew up with. She loves her family, but she wants to have a purposeful life where she can use her nursing skills to help others. She finds what she's looking for in the town of Splendor, Montana. Working as a nurse at her uncle's medical practice, she feels she's exactly where she's meant to be. When she meets Dax, Rachel discovers her life might not be as complete as she'd thought.

I fell in love with this historical romance and the whole cast of characters it had to offer. Rachel is strong, but feminine. She's compassionate, determined, and confident in her abilities as a nurse. Dax is intelligent, hard-working, and more than a little scarred by the horrors of the war. Sparks fly between Rachel and Dax, but there are challenges to overcome before they can be together. Dax faces both internal and external conflicts. An enemy from the past threatens his future while new enemies create havoc. Rachel is convinced Dax has already made up his mind about his future, and she's sure she isn't part of his plans. Rather than wait around, she takes matters into her own hands.

Full of danger, tension, and romance, Redemption's Edge is a very strong start to this new series by Shirleen Davies. This series has incredible potential and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the characters introduced. I strongly recommend this book to historical romance readers.

Another wonderful book from prolific author, Shirleen Davies. As with all her books, Davies builds her story around interesting characters and central themes. Her plotline is strong and varied, and the relationships she develops are complex and fascinating. The other unifying thread throughout her work is the setting: Montana, USA. Davies stunningly captures a sense of the rugged beauty of the Wild West, and conveys the dangers and difficulties of frontier life.

Redemption’s Edge is a historical romance set just after the Civil War. This is the story of Dex Pelletier and Rachel Davenport – both relative newcomers to Montana, both scarred by the Civil War. Rachel has become rooted in Montana, Dex is looking for a place to call home. This is a story of love and loss, pain and redemption.

Redemption’s Edge is the first book in the new Redemption Mountain series. If Davies’ previous series are anything to go by, this one will be fantastic!

Loved this book!!! The very fact that it grabbed and held my attention for two days and 1/2 a night is more than enough reason for 5 stars! I enjoy reading anything about the South!!! Being from Atlanta, and loving Savannah will draw me to this style of literature!! My husband had a fondness for Western lore and the theme of the Rangers kept his memory with me as well!!! Several family members will be reading Ms Davies book, as several want me to share right now since I have completed her story!

So pleased to have this fantastic authoress's works!!She can count on my devouring her books one right after the other!!!!!

People fundamentally changed by war are searching for purpose and turn up to be intertwined in a small town in Montana.

In this adventure while Rachel is finding fulfilment as a nurse, Dax is trying to escape responsibilities of a leader & commitment. Meanwhile, bullets are whizzing, deserters & outlaws are plotting and Pelletier brothers are trying make sense of ranching.

I enjoyed Rachel's strong compassionate character and was glad she took her future in hand.

The first in the Redemption Mountain series. It’s an historical romance set in Montana after the Civil War. Dax Pelletier had been a General in the Confederate army. Only his brother Luke, besides himself, has survived the devastation of the war. Dax wants to escape the responsibilities of leadership and running the family business in Savannah. He and Luke leave Savannah behind to become Texas Rangers. While chasing some robbers, the third member of their group, Pat Hanes is shot and killed. Pat’s dying request is to be buried on his ranch in Montana.

So with Pat’s body in a wagon, the brothers head to Splendor, MT, near Redemption Mountain. Upon arrival they discover Pat has given his ranch to them. However, Dax is not ready to settle down.

Rachel Davenport had also served during the war as a nurse for the Union army. Now that the war is over her family expects her to marry and live in Boston. However, she has seen too much death and suffering to live a life of privilege in Boston. She wants to use her skills as a nurse and so accepts her uncle’s invitation to assist him in his doctor practice in Splendor, MT.

Upon meeting Dax and Rachel feel an immediate attraction to one another. Yet, Dax does not want to stay in Splendor and Rachel will not abandon her uncle or the townspeople she has come to love.

The story is a western historical novel. So the story has its share of herd stampedes, shootings, robberies, and greedy land barons.

Ms Davies acquaints us with the people of the town. Some of them are also trying to escape the memories of the war. Others have come to create trouble, especially for the Pelletier boys.

I’ve decided to upgrade my previous review to 4 stars, as I just finished the second book in the series. I like that Ms Davies’ novels are clean. They are an entertaining quick read.

A couple years ago we vacationed in MT pretty much in the area this series is about. One of the days we rode off onto a back road and watched as some cowboys rounded up cattle. Observing one cowboy’s skill on a horse has helped me to create mental pictures of ranch life. We also visited the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historical Site.

While in MT, we also visited Bannack, the first territorial capital of MT. However, by the end of the Civil War, the capital was in Virginia City where a good number of Confederate soldiers had settled. The town was supposed to have been named after Jefferson Davis’ wife, Varina. A CT judge objected to the name and registered the town as Virginia City. Both Bannack and Virginia City are now ghost towns open to the public.

I love learning the history connected to a story I am reading. I wish Ms Davies had used the real names of the territorial capital of Montana in her story and included some of the history of the towns, whichever territorial capital was the basis for Big Pine. Both Bannack and Virginia City have some interesting stories connected with them. One sheriff of Bannack had also been a cattle rustler and hanged for his crime. Virginia City became a boomtown when gold was discovered just 6 miles away.

I think, though, that one reason this series of stories appeals to me is that I’ve been to MT and because of that, it’s easy for me to create a mental picture of the events in this story.

There were a few times I wanted to stop reading because of the too slow pace and the continual change of point of view throughout the story. But each time I wanted to, something intrigued me about the plotline, and I continued reading. The ending of the book made it worthwhile and now I am glad I kept going. Who knew a General-Texas-Ranger-Rancher could be so romantic?

I understand there are twenty books in the series, and I am not sure if I will continue, though the end definitely made me curious. And I would like to know about Luke's story too. I am way too curious for my own good.

Two Texas Rangers set out with a friend to catch a murderer. When Pat Hanes dies during a shootout, it was up to Dax and Luke to take him to his range in Montana. It was Hanes' last and final request to be buried on his ranch close to the Redemption Mountains. Though reluctant to go at first, the two brothers' integrity made the choice for them.
Each man had its own fears and reasons for living the life they did. Both veteran soldiers, Dax a former General, and Luke a former Major. Both come from a privilege life in Savannah but the war had changed life as they knew it and were looking for something different.
Once in Splendor, however, they realised that Pat Hanes will have another surprise for them. This changed their lives completely.

Rachel Davenport lived through the horrors of war and was a qualified nurse. When her uncle asked her to join him in Montana, she didn't think twice about it. Living the life of a socialite in Boston was not something she was looking forward to, so when the opportunity knocked at her door, she grasped it with both hands.
The small town of Splendor was nothing like Boston, but soon she settled into a good life, helping her uncle in the clinic. When Dax Pelletier rode in, life changed once more for this headstrong woman.
The romantic spark between the two singed throughout the plotline. Everyone knew something was happening between the two. But, as with all romance novels, they refuse to accept it.

Revenge, redemption, new beginnings, it centered on this town. Life was hard and difficult, and when the town sheriff was murdered, the suspense became almost unbearable. With hardened criminals looking for revenge, a wealthy rancher that wants more land and two brothers not sure they want the responsibilities, the plotline became very busy.

Each character had a choice to make, looking past their own fears to find peace in the territory of Montana and find the strength to move forward. Though difficult to read at times, I found the story very encouraging and the characters believable.

(Please note: I'm writing this review after having finished this book almost two months ago. I probably finished reading it with grit in my eyes and thought I'd review when I woke up later. *heh* Since then, I don't know how many other books I finished. I'll do my best, though.)
This was a pretty good book. I thought the plot was interesting. It bothered me that the hero was so dead-set on turning down a working ranch with such a vast area of land when it was just handed to him, especially since he had people willing to help him keep it running and his brother was enthusiastic about running the place with him. That just didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
*****
(Possible spoilers coming...
so if you don't like that,
just skip the rest
of my review.)
*****
As for the heroine, I don't know... I know she was forward-thinking because she really wanted to be a nurse after having done work in that area during the war. That's such an admirable thing and not usually something a woman would choose during that era. That she allowed Dax to take some liberties (and he was /pushy/...o.O) amazed me since she'd pretty much determined she'd never marry. Her capitulation happened too quickly, IMO. We, the readers, get it...to a certain extent. But if people were already viewing this woman in a negative light, why would she want to add to that stigma when she wanted to be accepted in the new town? She just made a few decisions I had a hard time justifying concerning the era, even with her forward-thinking personality.
My problem with heroes and heroines exhibiting this kind of deviation from good morals is that I want a hero or heroine I can look up to and try to emulate. There were certainly some admirable character traits in each of these MCs, but it's hard to take a character seriously when they allow momentary passions to override good sense. That's just me, though, and hardly applies to most people. So please do take that into consideration.
I did get invested in the plot. I wanted to know if the brothers would succeed in their endeavors at the ranch and whether 'love would conquer all.' It was a good, solid 3-star story for me.
I'd recommend this book to people who enjoy a fanciful, yet gritty, American west historical romance.

5/1865, Dax Pelletier (ex-Confederate Brigadier General) was having his horrible nightmares. Will they ever go away?
General Robert E. Lee (Confederate) had surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant (Union).
7/1865, Boston, MA. Harriet Davenport (wife/mother) was badgering Rachel Davenport (daughter) about meeting a man of her dreams. Well Harriet’s dreams anyway.
Uncle Charles offered Rachel a job in his Montana medical clinic.

7/1865, Savannah, GA. Dax, & Luke Pelletier (25, younger brother Confederate Major) were out of the Confederate Army.
Andre Pelletier (brother) had died of pneumonia.
The shipping business must go on.
Fast forward, Charles, Racheal, Hank, & Bernice (Hank wife) were taking care of Johnny, & Tat’s (cowboy) injuries.
Bob Jones, & Ted Jones (Bob’s brother) asked Dax if he had any work they could do.
Splendor, Wild Rose saloon. What did Cash Coulter ask Sheriff Gabe Evans?
Land/ranch owners are the Weston’s, the Kuhn’s, & the Frey’s.

What happened to Racheal?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Civil War era book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Civil War era movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Really enjoyable romantic western. Mostly well written - though a few things were out of place. Set in the super polite years after the American Civil War.
The main characters are Dax and his brother Luke, raised in wealthy Southern high society before leaving to fight in the war. Dax became a General, Luke was a Major. Rachel was raised in wealthy Northern high society, and became a nurse in the same way.
After the war is over, they both end up in a country town where they immediately fall for each other. Rachel is still a nurse, and the brothers have unexpectedly inherited a thriving cattle ranch.
Dax is fighting the attraction though, because he is still heart-sore from having so many soldiers die under his command, and is convinced that he needs time (years) with no responsibilities... including a wife. Relationship crossed wires abound.

Throw in a few bad guys, a couple of developing relationships, concerned/ nosy parents & friends, and pretty much every important male character is either a rancher or a former ranking officer from the war. One rancher starts off as the enemy, but becomes almost a friend.

Here's the negative parts.
A well-raised society girl is not going to be free with heavy kissing or fondling, and definitely no pre-marital sex.

The injuries that Rachel and her Uncle, the doctor treat are uneven. A bullet wound to the chest heals enough that the patient is not being treated the next day, yet another bullet wound to the shoulder is serious enough they're concerned about losing the patient. I know that all wounds are not equal, and effect in different ways - but I would've thought that would be the other way around.

Dax and Rachel's story

Dax and Luke Pelletier were officers in the Confederate army. Now that the Civil War is over, they went back home to Savannah to find their home destroyed. Dax wanted to sign over everything to Luke and leave. Luke has other ideas and leaves with Dax.
Never figuring that when they met Pat Hanes, how their life would change. They joined the Texas Ranger and chased down outlaws. When Pat got shot, he made them promise that they would take him home to Montana to be buried on his ranch. They did as he asked.
Not knowing that, now they owned the Hanes ranch and everything he owned.
Rachel Davenport had been a nurse during the war for the north. She was from Boston.
She came to Splendor to help her Uncle Charles, who was the town doctor.
They were attracted from day one. But it was a great process for them to finally get together. Dax wanted to move on. He had no intentions of staying in Montana. He was tired of always being in charge. He had been a General in the past. But his heart told him he loved Rachel, but he had never been in love before.
Rachel knew she loved him, but she wasn't going to force him to stay.
Many events happen with criminals who put them in danger and many challenges to them and their loved ones.
Another great story by Shirleen Davies. Can't wait to read the next book. I love your stories.

A New Direction

Dax Pelletier and his brother Luke, ex Confederate soldiers now turned Texas Rangers thought this would be their life job when their Captain was wounded and exacted a promise from them to carry his body to Splendor, Montana on his ranch he owned with the idea he would retire there. They committed to do this because of their respect and care for him. When they got to Splendor they found his
will stated the person or persons returning his body would inherit the entire ranch which turned out to be extensive as well as money in his accounts. This made them wealthy and turned their lives in a new direction.
Rachel Davenport was a Nurse in the field hospitals during the Civil War. She didn't feel she could go back to a society life with no real meaning when her Uncle; the doctor in Splendor, Montana asked her to come work for him at his Clinic and she gladly accepted.
Rachel and Dax began to see each other when she treated the sick and wounded at the ranch. She had as much experience and sometimes more than most doctors at treating gunshot wounds and between the Rustlers and Indians there were plenty.
This was the true Old West and they both were content with their lives there. The romance is beautiful and makes for a fun and heart warming story.

I love a good historical romance, especially one set in western settings like this one. I really liked this book a LOT. However, I wanted SO badly to just LOVE this book.... and it got *THIS* close to me loving it - but didn't quite hit the full mark for me. The plot line was great but tended to drag a little toward the end. The romance aspect was spot-on for me throughout the book... except it tended to get bogged down toward the end as well. Dax and Rachel's story kept me wanting more as it built along the way - but the end (*spoiler: when they finally got together (hint hint, wink wink))..... just seemed anticlimactic after all it took to get there. I'm not asking for a graphic encounter with super gory details but I just feel like she could have done a little better with that part after dangling them in front of my face for so long. Overall, I did enjoy this book and feel like it deserves the 4-star rating I gave it. Had the big finale to Dax and Rachel's romance been a little better, it would have earned a 5-star from me. I like Shirleen Davies's style of writing and plan to continue the series at some point.

Because Shirleen Davies is one of my favorite Historical Western Romance authors, I couldn't wait to get this book and start a new series. I wasn't disappointed. After the Civil War, there were so many displaced citizens in both the North and South, that many people had to start over, find new careers and seek adventure out west. Rachel was a nurse and saw death and destruction in the Northern hospitals. She feels the calling to follow her Uncle Charles to Montana where he is a Doctor. She wants to help him and become his nurse. Then there is Dax Pelletier and his brother, Luke, from the South. They were different as they had money after the War but sought adventure. The Pelletier family owned a shipping yard as well as a plantation. However, the Texas Rangers is where they could use their war training. The story leads the focal point to Montana where the Pelletier's have inherited a ranch from one of their Texas Ranger buddies. The book has many twists and turns as did the Country after the Civil War. This author did a great job leading us along the trail of history. I loved it.

Very long and involved historical western romance with several scenarios occurring. All the main characters survived the Civil war seeking a new life. Dax, who with his brother came to own a ranch in Splendor, Montana through a partner killed while in Texas. Rachel, who was a nurse, chose to join her doctor uncle, originally from Boston in the town. Many leftover grudges resulted in revenge, not allowing Dax to move forward with his attraction to Rachel. Definitely get one's money's worth in this book with the numerous characters and issues. Would have eliminated the two-sentence love scene to better relate to CF readers and would be deemed lacking by those genres which expected more. Otherwise, a worthy read for those who enjoy this genre.

Rachel leaves Boston to help her uncle with his medical practice in Montana. She was a nurse during the Civil war and just can no longer live with the restrictions and boredom of Boston. Besides she wants to be useful. Dax was a general for the south during the war. Upon arriving home he discovers that he and his younger brother Luke are all that is left of their family and only one warehouse is left where their home used to be. Dax doesn't want to start over in Georgia. He wants to go to Texas. He heads that direction and is surprised when Luke joins him. They become Texas Rangers. When a coworker is killed in the line of duty his last wish is that the brother take his body to Montana to be buried on his ranch. When they reach Montana they find out that since they bought the body home they inherited the ranch.

I started this book with high hopes as the opening is very well written, but I'm afraid that I've had to give up on it a quarter of the way through. The story line seems good and well thought out, from what I've read so far, and the characters are interesting. The big problem with Ms. Davies writing though is that the narrative constantly hops back and forth between different people's points of view, changing, often more than once, mid-scene. I've tried to stick with it, but I just can't read any more. If this issue were fixed then this book would have five-star potential.

A wonderful, clean, well written story about Travis and Isabella and their many trials to the realization that Travis doesn't want to live without Isabella!
This is a great story that grabs you in the very beginning and you do not want to put it down until it is finished! The action is also plenty in this book, there is nothing that anyone could call slow or dull a about this story! If you like a good romance story with a lot of action and adventure, set in the Old West time era, then this is a perfect book for you!
An excellent author who writes an outstanding story!

This story was intricate and well-executed, keeping me engaged throughout the book. The characters were well-portrayed -- including sub-characters. What was lacking, for me, was that the author chose a fictitious setting and told little about the location. This diminished the read for me. I would make a plea for a better proofreader/grammarian. Please learn the tenses of the verb "lie," as in "to lie down." The wrong verb tense popped me out of the story countless times.

Dax and Luke Pelletier along with Pat their friend are all
Texas Rangers. While chasing outlaws, Pat was shot, Pat was dying and he asked Dax and Luke to take him home to Splendor, Montana to his ranch to bury. This is very well written, characters are well defined and alive in this story. Suspenseful, very romantic, never dull, keeps you reading. I loved this story.
I never give the story away, you've gotten the very basic beginning.

Delightful and sweet

Western romances are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, so I always enjoy them. Redemption's Edge was no different. The main characters are of course wonderful and well-thought-out, but it's the way that you care about every character that really sets this book apart. I haven't read the sequels yet, in which I believe the focus is on a different pairing for each book, but the snippets you see in this book were good as well.

Troubled after serving in the Civil War, three people leave their old lives in search of a a more useful life; perhaps a chance of peaceful lives.
A nice paced flow of action and drama makes this an interesting and delightful read. The character development and dialog add to the enjoyable read; Dax was irritating in taking so long to realize where his true happiness truly lay.
Enjoyed the read.

A womens kind of western

I would like to say that I was looking for historical romance of a different sort. Once I started reading, I realized it was exactly what I wanted. The romance and the adventure are a perfect match. And I love any book with a strong lead role. Women are an important part of our war history. Not all of them say home and drank tea. They contributed in many ways. I will be looking forward to reading more of Dax and Rachel's adventures.

High hopes were dashed.

I really wanted to like this book but it was quite painful to read. The author was in everyone's head in each scene, which was really distracting and annoying. The characters seemed to have no emotional depth, so I could not relate to any of them. There were no descriptions of any of the scenery so I couldn't get a good feel for anything other than that they lived on a ranch in Montana. All in all, I was very disappointed.

Loveland Redemption

The Civil War tore our country apart. Families, friends, strangers all suffered. The characters in this novel were no exception. They all had memories and burdens to carry. However, the little town of Splendor, Montana accepts and welcomes people who served on both sides. The characters in this book are complex, interesting, and true to life. Action, adventure, and romance await the reader in this finely crafted novel.
