Forecast finds 37% of US employers to hire temps in Q2

April 02, 2015

Temporary employment is showing an upswing, according to CareerBuilder’s second-quarter 2015 US job forecast released today. The survey of hiring managers and human resource professionals found 37% plan to hire temporary or contract staff in the second quarter, up from the 33% who said they planned to hire temporary and contract staff in the same quarter of last year. Additionally, 31% reported that they plan to transition some temporary or contract staff into permanent employees in the quarter, up from 26% in last year’s second quarter survey.

The survey also found that 32% of employers plan to add full-time, permanent headcount in the second quarter, up from 26% last year.

“The brisk hiring anticipated for the second quarter comes against the backdrop of stronger sales, new product development and market expansion among companies of all sizes,” said CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson. “Small businesses have been playing a larger part in the solid stretch of job growth the US has experienced over several months. When you pair that with the fact that hiring has increased in a variety of industries and regional areas, it bodes well for workers seeking new and better-paying employment prospects.”

Industries expected to match or exceed the national average for adding full-time, permanent headcount in the second quarter:

  • Information technology: 49%
  • Transportation: 44%
  • Financial services: 40%
  • Healthcare (50 or more employees): 32%

Hiring by company size:

  • 50 or fewer employees: 23% plan to add full-time, permanent staff in Q2, up from 18% last year; 4% expect to reduce headcount, down from 6% last year
  • 250 or fewer employees: 27% plan to add full-time, permanent staff in Q2, up from 22% last year; 6 percent expect to reduce headcount, unchanged from last year
  • 500 or fewer employees: 29% plan to add full-time, permanent staff in Q2, up from 23% last year; 7% expect to reduce headcount, up from 6% last year
  • More than 500 employees: 38% plan to add full-time, permanent staff in Q2, up from 32% last year; 9% expect to reduce headcount, down from 11% last year

The survey was conducted online within the US by Harris Interactive on behalf of CareerBuilder among 2,175 hiring managers and human resource professionals. The survey was conducted between Feb. 11 and March 6, 2015.
