When the Mojo Goes Missing by Codi Gary

Welcome Codi Gary! Great of you to visit. I love the title of your topic. As an author I can totally relate to when the mojo goes missing. It is scary as hell. But like you said it always comes back. What works for me is reading in another genre, usually one of J.F. Penn’s books.

###

Codi Gary photoAs an author, I am asked often where my ideas come from and what do I do when I have writer’s block. This are excellent questions, but there is something much worse that can strike fear into your heart. What if you’re still writing, but what’s coming out isn’t what you’re used to? What if you’ve lost the fire, the passion…the mojo?

I’ve been struggling for months with just this problem. After two books that pushed me to write deeper and darker stuff, I was going to get a lighthearted love story, and I hated everything I wrote. Finally, I was to the breaking point and as soon as I wrote The End, I sent it to my Awesome Editor for her thoughts. But a dark cloud still hung over my head and I was afraid to start the next book in the series with this pessimistic mindset.

So, I decided to take a day and clear my mind. I would write something else, anything else for just a day and get my mojo back. It couldn’t be that hard. A blank, mocking screen answered me and I stepped away from it, watching an episode of iZombie and wondering why I was so backed up creatively. The beginning was exciting, just like in any relationship.

So, I emailed a good friend who offered me some advice; get out of my genre. Try writing in another genre for a few hours and see if it helps. After reading that, I closed out of gmail and shut my eyes, breathing in and out. And then I opened them again with a smile. Pulling up a new Word Doc, I didn’t write a paragraph synopsis or character descriptions. I wrote Chapter One and started typing.

And typing…and typing…

An hour later, I had 1123 words written and my eyes were getting heavy. Saving the document with my new character’s names, I shut down my computer feeling inspired, rejuvenated, and excited.

So the next time you’re feeling creatively blocked, step out of your comfort zone and just write. Don’t think about your readers or editors or publishers, hell, don’t think of anything. Just open your eyes, take a deep breath and let the story take you away.

And if that doesn’t work, binge eat ice cream and watch Buffy for a while. It will come back to you.

Eventually.

Synopsis

Codi Gary returns with another fabulous Rock Canyon romance: when veteran marine Everett Silverton meets the town’s smooth-voiced DJ Callie Jacobsen, sparks fly—but is passion enough to give these wounded souls another chance at love?

Bad For Me Codi GaryCallie Jacobsen isn’t about to open her heart to just anyone. Not so very long ago, trusting someone changed her life forever—and not in a fun way. Now she’s better off focusing on her career, her friends, and her dog. So when former Marine Everett Silverton takes an interest in her, Callie’s more than a little wary. No matter how
charming he is, men are a bad idea. In fact, she’s got the scars to prove it.

But Everett isn’t convinced Callie should shut everyone out—especially not him. He may be a hero to the people of Rock Canyon, but he’s got his own demons, and he bets they’re not that different from Callie’s. Still, he knows it’s going to take more than
chemistry to get her to let her guard down. Everett will do whatever it takes to show her she’s safe with him. All she has to do is take a chance, take a step … and take his hand.
