Virginia Tech Football loses Kumah, Cunningham to the Transfer Portal

Well, this escalated quickly.

After a sub-par 2018-19 campaign for the Virginia Tech Hokies football team, the upcoming football season was one that held promise of steps forward.

Instead, the Hokies will be without two important members of their offense heading into next season, as wide receiver Eric Kumah, as well as tight end Chris Cunningham, have announced on social media that they are entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Since Kumah and Cunningham have already graduated from Virginia Tech, both players will be eligible immediately upon selecting a new school. They will both have one season of collegiate eligibility remaining.

Kumah finishes his career with the Hokies with 70 catches for 883 yards and nine touchdown receptions. Cunningham, who was used primarily as a blocking tight end (and a very good one at that), will depart Virginia Tech with 22 catches for 297 yards and seven touchdowns.

After the departures of Kumah and Cunningham were announced, reserve walk-on wide receiver Sean Daniel also announced his intention to transfer on social media. Daniel was primarily a special teams player for the Hokies. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

To make matters worse for Virginia Tech fans, there is also confirmation in Kumah’s tweet that wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins will be departing from the program as well. There were rumors flying around multiple sites earlier in the week that Wiggins was being considered at Alabama as a new member of Nick Saban’s offensive staff, and on Tuesday night, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Wiggins had accepted the position as the new wide receivers coach at Alabama.

Rittenberg also reported that Jafar Williams, who most recently coached the running backs at the University of Maryland, is under consideration to replace Wiggins as Virginia Tech’s next wide receivers coach.

With a handful of players confirmed to be transferring, and Holmon Wiggins heading to Alabama, it is already shaping up to be another eventful offseason in Blacksburg.
