Opening Report: Spinelli's Bakery Now Serving in Park Hill

Park Hill residents have been found peeking behind the papered windows of Spinelli's Bakery at 4628 E 23rd Avenue for the past few weeks. They have anxiously waited for the opening of this coffeehouse meets ice creamery meets bakery.

Since Adagio Bakery & Cafe closed the doors in late 2014, Spinelli owners John and Ted Moutzouris have worked tirelessly to reinvent the space. The work is evident in the huge updates to the space, including new tile, flooring, counters, and wooden walls.

The original idea was a simple ice cream shop inspired by how quickly the small supply of ice cream runs out at Spinelli's Market in the summer months. The thought was to offer Sweet Action Ice Cream and use the baking area in the back for goods sold at the market. But the neighbors spoke up quickly about how much the block needed a coffee shop. The brothers responded by bringing in Pablo's Coffee and then adding some light bites to the mix.

What was supposed to be a low-key event on Saturday, April 11, turned into a grand opening in the truest sense of the word. Customers poured in steadily all day and it doesn't look like they will be slowing down. Breakfast burritos and quiches seem to be the front runners on the menu, but veteran Spinelli's baker Holly Bukey is offering her classics too: cookies, cannolis, lemon bars, and cakes.

The new neighborhood spot is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 9 on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the Spinelli's Market Facebook page for other updates.
