Nearly 40 high school students from throughout Sussex County participated in the 2015 County Government Day on Thursday, April 16, 2015, in Georgetown. The hands-on, interactive daylong event allowed students to take part in a mock County Council meeting in which they considered real-world issues, such as a proposed temporary vendor ordinance, a proposed dog control contract, a land use application, extending sewer services, a student paramedic program, and applying for a shelter grant. Participants also met with County leaders and toured County facilities. The students were part of the American Legion's Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary's Girls State programs, which are aimed at introducing young people to the workings of government.
