Xiaomi Launches Mi MIX 2 In Singapore

‘Tis the season to splurge, but it also seems to be the season for new product launches.

Three months after its first release, the Mi MIX 2 is arriving on the shores of Singapore on December 15, with pre-orders made available from December 12 onwards.

Building upon the design of its predecessor, the phone continues to adopt a full ceramic back in a collaborative effort with renowned designer Philippe Starck, allowing for a four-sided curved finish. Apart from bringing about a touch of aesthetic presence, it also serves up an important functionality by making it more resistant to scratches.

Upon first sight, such subtle details will escape the untrained eye – and that runs true in every aspect of the Mi MIX 2, including its well-known full-screen display. Where the previous one measured 17:9 in display resolution, the new release sports a 18:9 aspect ratio instead, with a chin that is 12% smaller. In other words, this means a bigger screen, which translates to a more immersive experience.

Another notable feature is the newly-implemented hidden sound guided speaker, an improved feature borne from public feedback. Because the Mi MIX was observed to have audio travel loudly through speaker transmissions (read: phone calls), this current one boasts a feature designed to lead the sound away for more privacy.

Of course, with a new phone comes better performance, and the Mi MIX 2 has swapped out the existing Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 for a Snapdragon 835. More power, with faster processing speed – that’s what a phone’s about, in the most general sense.

Also true to the spirit of going global, the device is Xiaomi’s first for the installation of 43 cellular bands, allowing for network support in 226 regions around the world. The days of having no signal are but a distant memory.

For all its differences, the Mi MIX 2 still retains some similarities to the previous model. More specifically, the camera is again located at the bottom of the phone, which means users may face compatibility issues with certain apps that do not allow for a change in photo orientation, such as Snapchat.

In the grand scheme of things, however, that is a minor issue, one that can be easily overlooked in favour of a low price point. Retailing for S$699, the phone can be purchased at authorised Mi Stores (Suntec City, Causeway Point) and Challenger outlets, or pre-ordered on Lazada’s official Xiaomi store instead.

The Mi MIX 2 looks set to follow in the successful shoes of its predecessor, but stay tuned to our review for a complete analysis.
