Walnut Grove: A Neighborhood that Cares

In the spirit of the spring market, we're dedicating the next few weeks to feature key Madison area neighborhoods. Our first feature, Walnut Grove, is situated west of Gammon Road and south of Old Sauk Road.  Built in the late 1970s, the community offers a nice variety of two-story, single family homes.

Stroll through the neighborhood, and you'll notice right away that while the community is close to main Madison streets, it feels removed from the busy life. Paths and walkways link cul-de-sacs together, and connect neighbors to each other. Mature trees line the streets, and give you a sense of both history and community.

John Pinto, president of the Walnut Grove Homes Association, is proud to call the area home. "It is a desirable place to live with quality, mid-priced homes," he said. "While neighbors are not 'nosy,' they care about their neighbors and look out for them."

Pinto mentioned that the neighborhood is incredibly kid-friendly, and residents enjoy easy access to Walnut Grove Park. The 20 acre park offers tennis courts, a dog run, a large playground and plenty of open green space. Neighbors enjoy the lay-out, and each other. The community offers a variety of events at the park, year-round. Recent gatherings have included Easter egg hunts, 4th of July parades, a Fall Bonfire and progressive dinners hosted in residents' homes. The association also plans neighborhood garage sales and other events.

The community is close to much of the west side, just minutes from West Towne Mall, and a broad selection of restaurants and shops. Both Jefferson Middle School and Memorial High School are within close walking distance. Crestwood Elementary is a short drive away, off Old Sauk Road.
