Thousands of passengers faced delays and cancelled flights due to the walkout by air traffic controllers at Marseille Airport.

Easyjet has cancelled more than 200 planned departures, while Ryanair has also shelved another 100 flights.

Flights to and from France and over the affected airspace have been hit.

French air traffic staff have repeatedly gone on strike this year – more than 750,000 passengers have reportedly seen flights cancelled in 2018.

Angry flyers have slammed both airlines on Twitter this weekend after journeys were affected by the cancellations.

Karen McLoughlin said: “Good evening @easyjet, you’ve just cancelled my flight home from France tomorrow (and Sunday flights also cancelled) do you have any suggestions on how I can make it to work on Monday please? South of France to Scotland. Thanks!`”

Catriona Hepburn said: “So, @Ryanair cancelled our flights back fro France on Sunday night. One operator hung up on me when I asked to speak 2 manager. Rescheduled flights. Now missing all of wedding on Sunday we flew for. Now got hassle if comp plus refund on car hire. Awful."

In a message to Ryanair, Craig Miller said: “You cancelled the flight on me in the middle of France 2 days before? “Then we can’t contact you at all? I will never be flying this mediocre airline again.

"Thank you for giving me the worst experience possible.

"I’ve never been more disappointed with an airline.”

Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's controversial chief executive, said 28 days have been lost already due to strike action by French ATCs this year.

He said: "You can't have the freedom of movement if a couple of hundred air traffic controllers in Marseille are going to shut down the skies over Europe on a regular basis."

Ryanair and British Airways owner International Airlines Group plan to lodge a complaint with the EU over what they claim has been France’s lack of action to stop the crippling strikes.

Frustrated customers have bombarded Ryanair with complaints this weekend due to the cancelled flights.

Diane Jeanette said: “Saving a few bucks to fly with @Ryanair is certainly not worth the nightmares that ensue a flight cancelation.

"A day after receiving cancelation notice for 2morrow, I still haven't been able to talk to anyone but am charged 0.34€/min to wait endlessly on the phone. Never-Again.”

Judy Condick said: “Hate Ryanair Air!! No service or information re delays at Bristol Airport today.

"Hot, no A/C at departures.

No one cares or is experienced enough to even say sorry. Never ever again!

One Twitter user said: “It’s about time someone takes ownership and actions against the constant strikes in France.

“Maybe avoiding going to and through France at all would clear this mess with millions of impacted passengers once and for all.”

A statement from easyjet said: “Flights that do not operate through France may still be affected as 65% of easyJet flights operate through French air space and may be delayed before arriving for your flight.

"We expect that there could possibly be delays due to the industrial action, therefore we advise all customers to check the status of their flight on our flight tracker either on our mobile app or website. "Although this situation is outside of our control we would like to apologise to any affected passengers for the inconvenience caused."

A Ryanair spokesman said: “All affected customers have been contacted by email and text message and advised of their options: a full refund, rebooking on to the next available flight or transferring to an alternative flight.

“As a result of this unjustified strike action, we also expect some significant delays to flights to/from/over France and we advise customers due to travel on Saturday and Sunday to check the status of their flight on the Ryanair.com website.”
